Hernando Cortes arrived in Tenochtitlan and allied with Tlaxcala, which were enemies of the Aztec Empire. The spanish forces fought the empire which weakened both parties involved. -

Fall of Tenochtitlan
The current leader, Cuitahuac died from a smallpox epidemic. Cortes took advantage of this and defeated the Aztec Empire after they surrendered. He later rebuilt the city as Mexico City.
