To escape the hostile atmosphere, in 1309 Clement moved the papal capital to Avignon. This was property of papal vassals at that time. -

Pope Gregory XI's visit in Rome is not going well. Hostilities plagued him and he considered returning to Avignon but before he could make any moves, he died. This officially ended the Avignon Papacy.
