Called the Holidome, the project primarily consists of a 29,000 square foot, two-story enclosure giving the Holiday Inn the latest in “atrium design.” The project was conceived about a year-and-a-half ago.

    Some guests were removed from their rooms at the Holiday Inn in Blackman Township because of a fire. No one was injured in the fire. James Crawford, deputy director of the Blackman Township Public Safety Department, estimates damages from the fire at $50,000.

    $1 million rennovation project launched
    Owners of the Holiday Inn of Jackson launched a $1 million renovation project. Radcliffe F. North, president of Northwest Inc., the owner of the Blackman Township property, said the aim is to modernize the motel and bring it up to the design standards of the 1990s and on through the year 2000. It will be the third major renovation project since the facility opened in 1960.

The township has been trying to buy the land from the North family and went to Circuit Court to determine its value. The North family owned what was the Holiday Inn of Jackson. The hotel is now the Avalon Hotel and Conference Center.

    Guests evacuated because of fire. Guests were evacuated at the Avalon Hotel because of a fire that appeared to have started in a trash bin near the hotel. The fire spread to a pillar on the outside of the hotel. Hotel residents and staff attempted to put the fire out themselves, but the extinguishers were expired.
