  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act 1975

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act 1975
    This law had states implement policies that assure a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to all children with disabilities. This included AT for students to have access to regular classrooms with wheelchairs and braille for example (LRE).
  • Technology-Related Assistance Act of 1988

    Technology-Related Assistance Act of 1988
    This law provides funding to develop statewide, consumer-responsive information and training programs designed to meet the assistive technology (AT) needs of individuals with disabilities of all ages.
  • IDEA 1991

    Extended AT device & service defintion to special education. Increased funding for states to use towards special education.
  • IDEA 1997

    IDEA 1997
    Reauthorized and IEP teams now mandanted to consider AT for all students. New language was added to IEP documentation to show condersideration AT services.

    Further defined AT devices as 'any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized'.
