BrailleLouis Braille invented a system of writing for sight impaired folks in which the print was in the form of raised dots. -
Invention of Contact Lenses
Optician Kevin Tuohy developed the first contact lenses. These helped those with sight impairments to be able to see clearly without glasses. -
Tech Act
The law passed in which students with severe disabilities would be provided with assistive technology. The law states that funding from the state would help in developing and purchasing assistive technology. -
IDEA 1997
Carried over the definition from the Tech Act of 1988, but some significant changes took place. One major change was the wording from "individual" to "child." Another change was that the law requires all students with disabilities be assessed for assistive technology needs. -
IDEA 2004
Minimal changes made from IDEA 1997. Articulated that assistive technology does not include medical devices that are surgically implanted.
