Ashley's Development

  • Born!

    Born!
I was born in Washington, DC via vaginal birth. The doctor had prescribed my mom sleeping pills when she was in labor so I was born not breathing and with a low APGAR score. But I quickly recovered and no long-term effects! (Sec 3.3 in textbook)
  • First words

    First words
My parents tell the story of how some of my first words were "beach" and "boats" because when we rented a condo at the beach, we could go on the roof and see the beach to one side and the bay (with boats) to the other side. I was only spoken to in English, so I only learned English as a child. (Sec 4.6 in textbook)
  • Visit California

    Visit California
When I was 18 mos old, my parents took me on my first airplane trip to California. My favorite song was "It's a small world after all" and my parents supported my toddler sense of autonomy (Kohlberg)by letting me play the music over and over. We also visited my dad's elderly aunt and uncle while we were there! I loved the kumquats from the tree. (Sec 1.3 & Sec 5.5 in textbook)
  • Younger brother born

    Younger brother born
When I was 2.5 years old, my younger brother was born! I've heard many stories about this time, but I don't have any real memories of it, most likely due to infantile amnesia (Sec 6.1 in textbook)
  • Period: to

    Attend preschool

I attended a preschool at a church near our house. It was a great way for me to develop socially, as I had many friends my own age. It was also a way for me to become familiar with the routine of school before I entered kindergarten (Sec 6.5 in textbook)
  • Period: to

Learn to read & read first chapter book

I remember learning to read in kindergarten and bringing home small simple books to read with my parents at night. I think I learned thru a combination of phonics & whole language approach. My parents encouraged me to "sound out" words and then think about whether they made sense in the context of the sentence. In 1st grade, I read "The Secret Garden" with my parents-- it took MONTHS to get through! (Sec 7.5 in textbook)
  • Period: to

Met one of my best friends

During my freshman year of high school, I met my friend Craig. He and I didn't go to the same high school, so in a way, it was easier to talk about our lives and share secrets and be honest with each other. Twenty years later, he's still one of my best friends, even tho we live 5000 miles away from each other! (Section 7.8 in textbook)
  • Period: to

    Attend college

I spent 4 years at Wellesley College in Massachusetts earning a BA in Psychology (Section 9.5 in textbook)
