Joe Begins to Shape his View of the World Around Him: Trust Versus Mistrust
Joe (age 1) begins to build a trusted relationship with his mother Teressa who provides a safe environment in which Joe feels protected. In Erikson's first stage of human development, trust vs. mistrust which takes place from birth to 18 months old, is an important period of life where infants begin to shape their views of the world around them. At this stage of life, infants are most dependent on their mother who chooses to create either a trusted or mistrusted relationship with their child. -
Joe in Explores the Art of Singing in Preschool: Initiative Versus Guilt
Joe (age 4) is in preschool, he is beginning to branch out and develop the initiative. At Joe's preschool he explores the world of music (singing), although Joe is not the most musically gifted singer, he does not feel guilty about singing out loud at all! In Erikson's stage 3 of human development, initiative versus guilt, toddlers learn what they can control and what they cannot while still having the most fun exploring new activities and not feeling guilty about learning. -
Joe Explores his Passion in Gardening: Identity Versus Confusion
Joe (age 17) loves to garden, he is so passionate about gardening that he is highly considering having a career as a farmer. In Erikson's stage 5, identity versus confusion, teenagers begin to learn more about personal goals, values, and beliefs. Joe is very passionate about gardening which incentivized him to pursue a career in farming. However, in my example, Joe is very lucky to have his goals in place at this age; while others are still unsure of their goals (just like me)!
