    Renaissance (1400-1550)

    Renaissance (1400-1550)
The Renaissance period in art symbolized a revival of classical culture in society. A few famous Renaissance artists were Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo. The piece I chose to represent the era is the Sistine Chapel, created by Michaelangelo, because it is a timeless piece that represents the religious beliefs of this time period. Some big names in literature during this time were Shakespeare, Milton, and Sidney.
  • Baroque (1600-1750)

    Baroque (1600-1750)
The Baroque Era represented a time in society where there was a great deal of religious conflict. The 30 year's war (between Catholicism and Protestantism) took place during this period. Some famous artists from this period were Caravaggio, Reubens, Bach, Vivaldi, and Bernini. The image I chose to represent this time is the palace of Versailles because it was extravagant, it is well known, and it exemplifies the architechtural theme of creation by division.
  • Neoclassicism (1750-1850)

    Neoclassicism (1750-1850)
Neoclassicism drew inspiration from the classical styles of Ancient Greece and Rome. It can be characterized by simplicity and symmetry, can be considered non-modern, and was essentially the opposite of romanticism. Well known neoclassicists consist of Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Canova, and Fuseli. The piece I found best represented the period was the Death of Socrates by Jacques-Louis David, because it uses a lot of symbolism and demonstrates the change in thought.
  • Realism (1848-1900)

    Realism (1848-1900)
Realism symbolized a revolution against the typical ways of romanticism that had been strong for so long. It depicted everyday subjects and situations in contemporary settings, and attempted to show individuals of all social classes in a similar manner. Famous Realists were Da Vinci, Courbet, Millet, and Daumier. I chose the Mona Lisa by Davinci to showcase realism because it was very realistic and showed an everyday situation, and is very well known.
  • Impressionism (1865-1885)

    Impressionism (1865-1885)
Impressionism was a huge movement that characterized a switch in art from religious and historical art to being more focused on daily life, as well as having multiple interpretations. Colors and light were used, and less attention was paid toward detail. Famous impressionists were Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, and Debussy. Debussy's melodies lacked motion and his harmonies focused greatly on strong instrumentals. I chose Monet's Rising Sun because it shows the petites taches&innattention to detail.
  • Expressionism (1900-1935)

    Expressionism (1900-1935)
Unlike impressionism, expressionism aimed to express emotional experiences through art, literature, and music. It can be seen as a reaction to positivism and naturalism. Poetry became prominent during this time period. Some famous expressionists were Munch, Van Gogh, Ensor, and Kandinsky. I chose the scream to represent this period because it expresses emotion.
  • Cubism (1905-1920)

    Cubism (1905-1920)
Cubism consisted of new forms to express modern life. Famous cubists include Picasso, Braque, Leger, Boccioni, Severini, and Malevich. Three dimensional form was widely prevalent, and everything was very abstract. The piece I chose was Les Desmoiselles d'Avignon by Picasso because it demonstrates the abstractness of this period, and the emphasis on dimension.
