Shwedagon Pagoda
This pagoda is one of my favorites because it is stunning! It is covered in gold, silver, and an assortment of various jewels. It is one of its kind in its "wealth" aspect. It is very important to the Buddhist culture because in this pagoda is said to house two of Buddha's hairs. The pagoda itself was a gift to Buddha from the people of Burma. -

Retable de Champmol
My favorite part of these two panels is the color scheme and the detail of the achitectural and landscape elements. The artist was trying to convey a 3D scene on a 2D surface. However the use of a gold background and halos around the figures head takes us back to elements of medieval pictorial conventions. The combination of past techniques and new ones show the artsits diverse skills and this is useful to my timeline because it shows how artists have developed over time. -

Machu Picchu
I think that this city-empire is truly incredible. The Inca's were masters of architectural design and building. Not only is Machu Picchu grand but also built on the side of a mountain. The buildings were crafted on-point and certain ones were designed for important astrological events. Overall the city deserves a spot on my timeline because one it wasnt discovered by outsiders until the 20th century and it shows how mathematically and architecturally advanced the Inca's were. -

January
Its fascinating that the Limbourg Brothers would create a piece like this because it combines religious and secular events. What I am most intrigued about this piece besides its lovely lunette calendar is the celebration scene depicted. It really adds a light and happy undertone to the work but also emantes an inviting and welcoming overtone as well. This piece is great for my timeline because it shows an integration of viewoints and really highlights the art of illumination. -

Isaac and his Sons
The artist really experimented the idea of space and depth with this panel. He created depth by using 3D geometric shapes and created space within the work by making the figures pop out more and lessening the density of the background. The artist also used the technique of linear perspective to create distance and employed aeiral perspective to show dimension. Its a well-rounded piece of art. -

Table with drawers
I think that it is interesting to see furniture categorized as being a form of art. Like in today's society most people don't consider a chair as being art but back in time certain pieces of furniture were so elaborate or designed by a famous artist that it was considered art no matter what. I love the color of this table and how it really highlights the table's features. I also like how the artist carved various images into the table, it adds a sense of style and personality to the table. -

Miraculous Draught of Fish
I really enjoy the story behind this piece. It tells one of Saint Peter attempting to walk on water like Jesus Christ did. This piece is a great addition to my timeline because it depicts an exact location in the world and it is one of the first 15th century works showing a specific site. This is important to Art History because it marks a time in the advancement and renewed style of the century. -

West facade of Santa Maria Novella
I simply am intrigued by the Gothic resemblance design of the building and how strong the elements of geometric and mathematical proportions are combined to create this structure. The building looks almost cartoon-like because of all the shapes and even the colors in a way. The building literally represents so many historical time periods all into one such as: Baroque, Romanesque, and Medieval. It is perfect for my timeline. -
Jan 28, 1464
Last Supper
I love the simplisctic realism of this painting. Everything about it represents simple techniques that ingage viewers to the realistic attributes of the work like: eating at a table, being in a room full of people, the inviting nature of the room. The artist was one of the first to use a single vanshing point as a way to create perspective, which is why this piece is perfect for my timeline. -
Jan 28, 1465
Battle of the Ten Nudes
I love the technique of engraving and in this piece it highlights the realism of the men depicted. The artist created figures with such detail that viewers can see every muscle tension, sinew, and other usually masked features of the human body. These features accent the human body perfectly. The fact that these men are performing violent actions and are not at rest show the increased mannerism of the artist himself. -
Mar 26, 1469
Coyolxauhqui
This decorative stone should be on my timeline because it tells a story of the Aztec culture and religion. It explains that Huitzilopochtli defeated his sister, the moon goddess, and his 400 brothers. He disemembered her body and she is surrounded with her fallen brothers. The Aztecs would throw their enemies down the mountain to land on this stone to prove that they had complete power during this time. The stone relief is a dreadful but formal beauty, -

Death and Assumption of the Virgin
At first glance I noticed the ornamental carvings and statues and the brillant blue that engulfs the background of the altarpiece. Stoss captured Mary's death with every ounce of Gothic Art elements to heighten and glorify the event. I really appreciate how he used architecture, sculpture, and painting in perfect unison. -
Jan 28, 1482
Primavera
This is one of my favorite works from the 15th century. I like its ambigous meaning and the use of Roman Gods/Goddesses to portray a sort of wedding scene. The artist really captured my attention with his stylistic conventions such as: color, body placement/movement, and the fluidness of the entire piece. This work is a beautiful compostion that truly defines the means of art. -
Feb 10, 1498
Pieta
I am extremely impressed with the artist's demonstration of sadness that is figuratively painted on the Virgin Mary's face. The emotion of the entire sculpture is breathtaking. I love the drapery of Mary's clothing and just the pure detail of the work. I also admire how the artist made Jesus look like he is in a peaceful slumber even though he is dead. -

Portal, Colegio de San Gregorio
Even though this portal was built in the late 15th century there are still elements of Gothic era designs and technique. This piece also encompasses a new era of art called Plateresque which means "silversmith". The portal is adorned with detailed ornamentations which resemble elegant metalwork. This portal has the coat of arms of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, which is significant for the history of the art world. -

Damned Cast into Hell
I really fellin love with the intensity beauty of this piece. It is truly captivating and it depicts a diffucult topic: the end of the world. I like how the author postioned the figures of the work, in such anguish and immense suffering. It is truely mind boggling and leaves such an impact on the mind itself. The author did a fantastic representation of what it might be like to be tortured by demons. The fresco is a great addition to my timeline because of the emotion put into the figures bodies -

Lingering Garden
This piece of artwork is very unique to my timeline because there is none other like it so that's why I think it belongs in my timeline. In these gardens the workmen would gather stone and dredge it from a lake and shape the rock formations. This added to the more natural look and appeal of the fantastic rockwork. -

Dish with two mynah birds on flowering branch
This piece of pottery and others like it are important to my timeline because they show how a mass production of an item was spread to other countries and that it was a major export item of Vietnam. The artist was able to prove his debt to China by depicting the two mynah birds on the branch. The artist was also able to create a new and fresh style and technique of Vietnamese pottery. -

Great Piece of Turf
Watercolors are one of my favorite styles of painting. I love the fluidity and realistic but not overwelhming effect they produce. This painting by Durer really embodies this mood and technique. The painting itself is great for my timeline because it helped botanists identify and study a variety of plants. This is important to history because it connects art to the world and without this painting it wouldve taken longer for botanists to discover and identify these plants. -
Feb 9, 1505
Mona Lisa
The Mona Lisa is one of the most iconic paintings in the world. It is exquisite in style and perspective and yet it is mysterious and engaging. Mona Lisa captures individual personality and holds a gaze with its viewers. It is one of my favorite artworkd of this time period. -

Feb 10, 1511
Creation of Adam
I love the beauty and the humanistic approach of this piece. I also enjoy how it connects the High Renaissance, Christian, and Classical traditions all into one unified piece. This artwork is extremely interesting because it is a scene that has "future" components, such as Jesus' infant face and Eve underneath God's arm. This piece is truly magnificent and tells such a great story. -
Feb 11, 1529
Battle of Issus
I love the impeccable detail of the piece and the vastness that the setting encompasses. Feb 10, 1540
Saltcellar of Francis
This piece really stands out in this era because of its use of gold as the medium and the Mannerist form of the figures. I enjoy the relaxed and calm emotion of the piece. Overall this piece of art belongs on my timeline for its aweinspiring mood and technique that the artist crafted into the piece. -
Feb 11, 1548
Self-Portrait
This painting back then was probably really inspiring to other women artists' because they now could paint self-portraits and not be judged for their work. I think this portrait really shows the artist personality and her own self-view of herself. She paints herself as a confident woman painting and only stops working to lokk at the viewer. The artist even took such care to inscribe her own painting to recieve credit for this work. Overall this piece is a great addition to my timeline. -
Mar 1, 1560
Pine Forest
I really enjoy this piece because it draws the viewers in by its calm and medative atmosphere. The artist technique of brush strokes show pines covered in mist. The trees seem to recede to the background and emerge into the foreground as if the landscape was on the edge of formlessness. These panels evoke a peaceful Zen mood while also showing the illusory nature of reality. -
Feb 11, 1565
Hunter's in the Snow
I really like the story presented in the painting. I like how the setting is winter and it tells of the homecoming of the hunters to thier town. The artist also mastered line, shape and compostion which really add to the way we see and understand the piece as it is meant to be. -
Mar 1, 1575
Chinese Lions
I love the symbolic meaning of this panel artwork and I also think that these Chinese lions are quite interesting because they look nothing like real lions. The lions represent power and bravery just like the Momoyama dynasty warlord. The panels also represent the emphasis on militarism during this time. The piece is truly interesting in concept and really tell a great deal about the Momoyama dynasty and what it stood for. -
Great Temple, Madurai
The most striking feature of the Great Temple is the gopuras or gateway towers. Each tower was constructed out of stucco sculptures. These sculptures were brightly painted and were in honor to the various HIndu deities. -
Boat Bridge
I think that this writing box is extremely unique piece of art and it is carefully and uniquely crafted. The artist really told a story on this book and what is ironic is that stories and other writings went inside the box. The motifs of the bridge, the writings, river, and the boats cohesively connect and add to the stylistic aspect of this box. Overall the box is great for my timeline because it combines craft decoration and painting into one unique design. -
Flight into Egypt
I think that the peaceful and serene landscape and atmosphere of this piece really draws the attention of its viewers. The landscape represents the blissfulness of life and it overpowers the narrative of Mary, the Christ Child, and Saint Joseph. The artist was ablse to capture dimension and spatial atmosphere by varying the light and shadow of elements in this work. -
A Dwelling in the Qingbian Mountains
The best part of this painting to me is the shading ability the artist created throughout this artwork. I love the landscape that is depicted and just how expressive the work is. The artist is known as being the "first modernist painter". His work foreshadows that of artists in Europe around the 19th century. The artist was able to create unique abstract patterns by flattening the compostion. Overall this piece is a great addition to my timeline. -
Baldacchino
I love the fact that this piece serves both functional and symbolic purposes. The structure is very appealing to the eye because of it being casted of gilded bronze and it standing at 100' ft high. It incorporates elements of the past to reinforce the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church. The structure visually shows the triumph of Christianity and the power of the papal. -
Hanging Tree
This etching has such deoth and meaning behind what is being portrayed. It tells the story of the mass execution of theives. Each section of the work tells a different part of the overall story at hand. This piece belongs in my timeline because the artist was able to create a fluid work of art that tells a story and it is one of the first pictorial records of h\the human disaster of military conflict. -
Aerial view of the Taj Mahal
I think that the Taj Mahal is perfect for my timeline because it was built in India and yet the Taj Mahal is a mausoleum. It was not Hindu or Buddhist custom but rather Islamic tradition architecture. This shows that regardless of what culture you are you can still make an impact in the world. The Taj Mahal is an allusion to the Throne of God and is very symbolic. The architect used perfect porportions to create the Tomb and it is of monumental design. -
Triumph of the Barberini
I just absolutely love ceiling frescos becaus ethey are beautiful and they just put one into awe by looking at it. Consequences of War
The artist really honed in on the medium of this work to really connect each figure to another. The painting is full of moving energy and it flows marvelously. You can tell the artist wanted each figure to have its own purpose and meaning. The fluid composure of the human figures and the emanating energy that pulsates from each figure really shows the personality of the artist and his inspiration and ideas from his other works. -
Aerial view of Saint Peter's Basilica

Facade of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane
What I love most about this facade is that it is not a traditional style facade. This one is not flat, but it radiates off the buiding and is decorated with various sculptual elements. The building also has two facades beside the traditional form of only having one. The two facades create an unity between the interior and exterior space. The building is very unique and really captures the architects perspective and views. -
Saint Paul's Cathedral
I think hat what is neat about this Cathedral is that the architect who designed it had to design his work and co-exist it with the old Cathedral that was once in its place. The design comes from works by architects in Italy. This Cathedral shows how other architects from different countries influenced eachother's works and designs over time. -
Church of the Invalides
I absolutely love this because I've actually been to it in rel life and it is one of the reasons I truly started to be inspired by architecture. One of my favorite things about going to France was getting to go here and to walk around and getting to know more about Napolean's life. I think that it is perfectly yet simply structured. The dome of the Church is unforgettable and just mesmerizing and that is what stands out to me the most in this work of architecture. -
Flower Still Life
I love the realistic and rich compostion of the flowers painted. The arrangement of the flowers are lushfully and perfectly placed. The flowers seem to be literally spilling out of the vase they are constructed in. Overall I just love how well though out and detailed this painting is, even if it is just an arrangment of flowers. -
Auspicious Objects
I love how this painting is purely naturalism. Each element such as the white eagle and the pine trees are motifs that honor and celebrate the birthday of the emperor. The artists was able to combine european and chinese techniques and styles. He used european lighting techniques and 3-D volume and combined that with traditional Chinese subects and compostions to beautifully unify this piece. -
Riva Degli Schiavoni

This painting deserves a spot in my timeline because it was treasured by many tourists from other countries and it unifies all aspects together. -
Linguist's staff of two men sitting at a table of food

The artist was able to combine a number of French and Italian Baroque techniques. -
Pantheon
My favorite part of this work of architecture is how it combines so many elements and features from different countries. The artist decided to pay homage to the Enlightenment admiration of Greece and Rome. The architect used a roman temple based plan and combined it with a dome and a Greek cross-plan. This is important to my timeline because it shows that the architect was an ingenious man and that he was able to unify different region styles and different time periods together in one building. -
Iron Brdge
The architectural work is perfect for my timeline because it is the first bridge in history to be made out of iron. It belongs in my timeline because the artist skillfully constructed an important deity and highlighted every feature of the figure to portray how important the deity was to the Hawaiian culture. -
Rotunda and Lawn
This architectural work is important to my timeline because it shows how far along the communications between countries have come. This piece is also inique because it is located in the US which is significant because there havent been but a few artworks from the US shown in this class. -
The Great Wave off Kanagawa
I enjoy the cartoonist realism effect of this painting. It reminds me of what a wave might look like in a cartoon or a sort of graphic design. Back then in the 1800's is was considered just a Western Style painting. The artist depicted danger for the men in the boats by creating a massive threatening wave. The artist stayed true to his roots by creating a painting that was traditional of japanese art. -

This piece is extremely important to my timeline because it combines an actual historical event with with poetic allegory. Warrior figure from the palace of Glele
Even though this figure was created in the mid 1800's, it looks like it could have been made thousands of years ago, in the ealry human days. It shows that african cultures have not advanced as fast as other countries and create in a more earlier stage of culture development. I like the piece because it tells about a war god of the culture and that shows that that culture believed in higher beings and wanted to depict them for viewers to see. -
Twilight in the Wilderness
This is one of my favorite paintings because it so beautifully realistic. It literally looks like a perfect sunset in the mountains. The painting doesn't even look painted, it looks more like a modern day photograph. The painting represents the ideal view that America is free from conflict and is a sublime place. It is perfect for my timeline. -

It great for my timeline because it is an example of how wealth and people influence art design., which is important to history because it shows that France was economically stable during this time period. -
A Harvest of Death
This piece is truly wonderful not necessarily in its content but its purpose. The photographer of the photo really embraced death and encased the horrific effects that war causes. The photograph is simple and elegant even though it protrays something as dark and evil as death. The artist took a common thing about life and truly magnified it to show that death is a high price for war, and thats why it belongs in my timeline. -
Throne and footstool of King Nsangu
This work of art is a great addition to my timelime because one does not usually consider a throne and footstool as art. People usually think of art as statues or paintings, but in this case its a throne for an African King. The throne and footstool are lavishly decorated colored textiles, beads and shells. The throne advertises the kings power and wealth to all who entered his palace. -
The Falling Rocket
This work is a perfect example of Impressionalism. The artist was able to convey the impressionalist view of atmospheric effects by depicting fireworks shooting into the night sky. Overall I think this piece is truly beautiful and simplistic and I think the artist was able to incorporate enough of himself in the piece that the piece is able to express personality and a story. -
Horse Galloping
This work is a great addition to my timeline because it 1) proves a scientific point if all four feet of a horse going at top speed were all ever lifted off the ground at the same exact time and 2) it helped modern day cinema works. I love that this piece is constructed out of multiple photographs and arranged in a way that tells a sort of story of what was really taking place. -
Maharaja Janswat Singh of Marwar
I really love how the person that wanted this piece commissioned of himself decided to compose a painting of two different cultures and blend each style with eachother. The ruler portrayed sits as if he is posed as a normal British gentleman, instead of being placed on a lavish throne like a ruler in India should be. Another important aspect of this portrait is that is was painted from a photograph which really shows how far along humans have come and accounts for the realism of the painting, -
Starry Night
I'm really glad to have this piece of art in my timeline because it ws created by the infamous Vincent van Gogh. I love the abstract and expressive design of shape, color, and line in this piece. The Scream
I think the artist did a great job of displaying emotion of despair and loneliness. The artist wanted to create a work that evoked a visual and emotional respose from the viewers, and I think that all art should have this quality and thats what makes this work a great addition to my timeline. The artist created a work grounded in the real world however, it visually departs from reality. The colors, the curve of the lines, etc in the piece all add to the artist's resonance he wanted capture. -
Eagle transformation mask
I really like how this mask transforms the wearer from eagle to human and back again, while they dance. The colors and design really pop and make an audience appeal. Chilkat blanket with stylized motifs
These blankets became really popular during this time and were characteristic of the Northwest Coast art form. I think that the blanket is esp. important to my timeline not only because of their animal and abstract motifs but also because they were made and designed by both men and women. This shows that women in this time and culture were allowed to be artists and even seen equal to men, whereas in europe women were often criticized for being artists. -
The Dance
The artist really embraced the use of bold and vibrant colors to describe the joyful expression and tone of the piece. The use of these particular colors were to produce emotion from viewers, increase the light, and to develop a cohesive piece. The piece is characteristic of Fauvism because the colors express the picture's content. Overall, I really love the flattened perspective and the bold outstanding colors of this painting. -
Casa Mila
I am in love with the design of this building. It is one of the most unique building designs I have ever seen. I think that it is pretty neat that the structure makes waves and twists and turns out of its materials and is still structurally sound. The building represents passionate naturalism and is a sort of model for 20th century Expressionist sculpture and painting. It is perfect for my timeline because of its unique design and its relationship to the natural world. -
Auuenau
This work of art is truly interesting, because it has fictional characteristics but the fact that the artist represented the ancestral being as having organs and a skeletal system it shows that the artist is well aware of human anatomy and used this as a technique for their art. The painting is fluid and has a dynamic quality. This piece is great for my timeline because it shows what kind of "state" the Aboriginals were in and that reflects in the style of art they depict. -

It represents the Futurist faith in the cleansing action of war. It also captures the dynamism and motion central to the manifesto if the movement. Its a great addition to my timeline. -
New York, Night
I think that the darkness of this piece really has a strong mysterious gravitiating energy to it. The source of light is minimal, only shown through small windows of the city's high rises, add rhythm and they pulsate energy through them. The dark/light really balance each other in the sense that they each complete the piece in just the right amount use. The artist did a Precisionist representation of New York. This piece is really attractive to eye and is a simply executed piece of art. -
American Gothic
This particular painting is an American icon. It is one of the best-known paintings from America and there have been many recreations of this work. Many people saw this painting has having embodied the "America Spirit" . The artist captured the Mid-western lifestyle and had many critics because some saw the work as insulting. -
The Persistance of Memory
Finish writing -
Maria Montoya Martinez jar
This piece of pottery reminds me of ones from ancient Greece or ones from the Asian region. It is simple and is characteristic of older pottery methods, yet modern as well. I really appreciate the artist's abstract designs and polished form. It belongs in my timeline because it shows that in the modern era women are well renowned for their work no matter what type of art it is. -
Flag
The American flag is one of the strongest american symbols in the United States. This artist created the Flag, using the technique of encaustic. By using this method, the artist could work rapidly and it allows viewers to see the layered painting process. The artist took the flag as the subject of his work because he wanted to show that the flag is viewed but not critized, This reasoning was the same for most of his other works as well. -
Saraband
I like how on each of the ends of the painting the colors are darker and heavier and then in the middle the colors are light, bright, and playful. What is intersting about this piece is that the artist did not paint it. Yes, the canvas is covered in paint, but the artist actually poured the paint onto the canvas. This is an unique way to make different shapes and designs with paint, without actually painting anything. -
Marilyn Diptych
This piece is truly an iconic masterpiece. Marilyn Monroe is the star depicted in this work. She has become a symbol of consumer product and the artist used the repetition of her face to prove this point. The endless and glamorous visage represents as it did for the American public, in the aftermath of her death. This piece is perfect for my timeline because it shows how a person will always be remember long after they have died. -
Rent Collection Courtyard
This artwork is great for my timeline because it depicts a harsh and rough historical time in China. The artwork shows the enslavement and exploitation of the peasants in China and the harsh conditions and environment they were forced to work in. The message of the piece is to show that many Chinese don't want this to happen again and that only action could affect the transformations the People's Republic sought. -
The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths
Conceptual art is one of my favorite groupings of artworks. In this piece the artist explores his interest in language and wordplay in his art. He created his artwork using neon with glass tubing suspension frame, which is a really cool medium to use to create art. The sculptures emphatic assertion is of a totally silly idea, but an idea that the artist believed in, which adds to the artist's idea and not the final expression of the piece. -
Spiral Jetty
This artwork is a great addition to my timeline because it is unlike any other conventional works and it is unlike any works on my timeline already. Even though this work of art is painted I think the artist achieved a sort of modern/computerized look to their painting. I also appreciate that the artist was clear in the story of their painting. -
Symptom
I think that this piece of artwork is a really neat and creative way to design a piece of art. I think that using all natural elements from the Earth to make this creation was an inspirational and unique concept. It is also truly amazing because this particular sculpture is swirly and created from branches and it is quite remarkable that the artist was able to accomplish the bendature of the branches for his design. The artist approach to sculpture reflects ancient Shinto beliefs. -
Ta Tele
This artwork belongs in my timeline because of its deep symbolism and meaning. The audience within the painting all have different industrial aspects carved in their heads. The speaker in the piece is surrounded with tvs and is holding a tv of himself. Not only does it incorporate modernistic items as well as painting technique but it also has tribal and cultural elements. The artist was able to combine and unite these things in one interpretive piece. -
"Beautiful Lady" dance mask
I think that its interesting for cultures to create masks for themselves, that usually represent their deities. This mask is pretty neat because its for men but its a female face and it not only has a face but also has a bird situated on top of the head of the mask. The mask belongs on my timeline because I really like the design and style that the artist created and because it is an important part of the african culture. -
Untitled
This style of painting was what got me interested in the different techniques and interpretations of art. I love how its painted but its created in dot form, like each image is comprised of different color and sized dots. This specific work is lovely and resembles or draws from the idea of garden seeds and plants in Africa. It deserves a spot on my timeline because it is one of the most intricate and interesting ways of creating art. -
Row of moai on a stone platform
These monoliths are one of the most famous because they are closely associated with the famous Easter Island Heads. The moai are suspected to be ancestral chiefs. The monoliths mark important religious cermony sites as well as burial tombs. They belong in my timeline because their construction is an achievement alone, because these statues are over 40 ft tall and to be created in the 10th century is astonishing.
