1948 War
Israel declared Independence. Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq attacked Israel. Israel gained land, Egypt gained the Gaza Strip, and Jordan gained the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Jews became refugees. -
Attrition Battles
Israel gained land and watned to allow other religions to Holy Sites but the Arabs did not agree with the idea of peace. This caused many Arab nations to attack and carry out terrorist acts. The Attrition Battles lasted from 1967 to 1970. -
Settlement Construction Begins
The Israeli government approved of the construction of settlements. From 1976,, the number of settlers on the West Bank increased by approximately 290,000. Opposers of the settlements argued that it would make it harder to travel and that it would drain the Israeli military. -
Six Day War or the 1967 War
Egypt blockaded Israel. Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq moved troops to Israel's borders and made threatening statements. Israel launched a preemptive strike, Israel captured the West Bank and Easy Jerusalem from Jordan, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the Gaza Strip and all of the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt.More Palestinians and Jews became refugees. Terrorism became more common. -
The October War or Yom Kippur War
Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish year. After the initial success of the Arab military, Israel eventually pushed back the attacks.The U.S. convinced Israel to withdraw from the territories it had entered. -
Egypt and Israel Sign a Peace Agreement
Egypt was the first Arab country to recognized Israel and enter a peace treaty with it. This resulted in Israel returning Egypt's captured Sinai and removed Jewish families from homes there.This became a model for Israel's "Land for Peace" policy. -
The 1982 Lebanon War
PLO units launched an attack on Israeli communities. As a retaliation, Israel attacked PLOs in Lebanon. Israeli troops gained land from Lebanon to Tunisia. Israel continued to maintain a strong military presence in Lebanon until 2000. -
The First Intifada
Palestinians in the Gaza strip and west bank engaged in an uprising. The Israeli army used for to contain the violent outbreaks. The Palestinians and Israeli army fought and resulted in an equal number of deaths on each side. The fighting ended in 1993. -
The Oslo Accords
The Oslo Accords were a set of agreements that began in 1993. The staarted because Israel and the PLO signed a declaration of principles. This led to the creation of the Palestinian authority. Israel withdrew its military from the Gaza Strip. The PLO and Israel finally recognized one another. -
Israel and Jordan sign a Peace Treaty
The U.S. assisted Jordan and Israel in achieving peace. This had many positive outcomes on each society. Trade, buisness relations, tourism, cultural exchanges, and scientific cooperation increased. But this increase was at a slow rate. -
The Camp David Summit
The United States, Israeli, and Palestinian leaders attempt to achieve peace, but the Palestinian president, Yasser Arafat, refused all offers. He also made no counter-arguments. Peace was not achieved and conflicts between countries continued. -
The Second Intifada
The Israeli General, Ariel, Sharon, visited the Jewish Temple Mount. The Palestinians believed taht his visit was provacative, causing riots and increasing terrorist attacks. These uprisings are still continuing during the present day. -
Arab Peace Initiative is Proposed
The Arab league enforced a peace initiative that was proposed. It offered Israel peace, but in return Israel had to withdraw from all territories captured in the 1967 war. Israel eventually accepted the proposal but rejected the demand to withdraw to the pre-1967 borders. -
Israel Begins Constructing the West Bank Barrier
Israel started to build a security barrier that sperated citizens from terrorist gorups in West Bank. By doing this, it reduced the amount of suicide bombings but also made Palestinians mad because it seperated men from their land of work and study. -
The Roadmap for Peace is Proposed
A plan for peace proposed by the "Quartet" in the U.S, Russia, European Union, and the United Nations. Its goal was to secure Israel and make Palistan an independent state. There has not been significant progress as a result of the roadmap yet. -
Israel Disengages from Gaza
It was determined that Israel would withdrawal from the Gaza Srip. In result of this, the number of rockets fired by terrorists from Gaza into Israel increased a lot. -
Hamas is Elected
Palestinians elected Hamas because they saw their previous government currupt and knew he would be a good fit. Many western nations imposed sanctions and suspended aid to Palestinian authority after Hamas was elected. -
The 2006 Lebanon War
Hezbollah attacked any Israeli army forve they could get their hands on. At the same time, they launched rockets into Israeli cities and towns. In result of this, there was a great loss of civillian lives, massive property damage, and Israeli troops damaged Lebanon's transportation infrastructure in attempt to prevent Hezbollah from re-supplying. -
The Battle of Gaza
Hamas militants attacked fatan members throughout Gaza. There has been tension between them since Hamas was elcted in 2006. The Palestinian president dissolved the Hammas government in result of this battle. Also, there are now two Paletinian governemnts today, Hamas (controls Gaza) and Palestinian Authorities (controls the west bank). -
The Gaza War
Israel attacked Hamas Targets in Gaza in attampt to stop rocket attacks on Southern Israel. Hundreds of militants were killed, there were many civillin casualties, and Gaza's buildings and economy were heavily damaged. -
Gaza Flotilla Incident
Ships set sail to break Israel and Egypts blockade of Gaza, they disregarded anyting Israel said. 9 turckish activists were killed, Israel gained control of the ship and directed it to Ashdad along with 5 other ships. Permitted goods were shipped into Gaza. -
The Arab Spring
Protesters spread around the Arab world starting at Tunisia. The Tunisian president left the country as the Egyptian president did as well and resigned. The long term impact of the changes still ongoing in the Arab nations on the Arab-Israeli conflict is not clear.
