Kemmerich is the first to die in the war. Before he dies, he gives his boots to Muller.
Kemmerich dies and his boots are very symbolitic during this story. "In the final choice a soldier's pack is not so heavy as a prisoner's chains." -
Paul joins the German Army.
Paul is the the narrator of the story, he is a big part in this story. Paul and his friends joined the army because they their teacher Kantorek, would give them speeches about how they should join. "You still think it's beautiful to die for your country. The first bombardment taught us better. When it comes to dying for country, it's better not to die at all." -
Men go out for a battle.
150 soldiers went out for battle but only 80 return. "And you've got bread for 150 and sausage for 150 and tobacco for 150?" -
Training day
The day they were being equiped with their combat skill. "It's unendurable. It is the moaning of the world, it is the martyred creation, wild with anguish, filled with terror, and groaning." -
Kemmerich is in the hospital.
Paul visits Kemmerich in the hospital. His leg was amputated, but Paul and the others can't bring themselves to tell him the pain is his foot is phantom. "We were all at once terribly alone; and alone we must see it through." -
Paul vistits Kemmericks mother.
Paul visits Kemmerich's mother, he swears her son died fast, even though he did not. Paul has no qualms swearing to this lie. Parting is all we know of heaven and all we need to know of hell. ~Emily Dickinson -
Paul returnes home!
Paul returns home on leave. Although he is home, he does not feel at home, because of wha hehas seen and done in the war. Sometime they'll give a war and nobody will come. ~Carl Sandburg -
Himmelstoss gets Beat.
Paul and his friends find out that himmelstoss was at a pub and when he came back they beat him to death. "We're the Second Company and if only half of us get back, that's our good luck. Come on, dish it out!" -
Sleeping in a graveyard
Paul and his friends have to sleep in a graeyard. They throw the bodies out of the coffns and sleep there. "Early to bed and early to rise probably indicates unskilled labor."

Tanks and gas
Tanks and gas are being used more intensely on the western front. "They are sick in their minds. They say they brought 65 tanks into center of city. I say to you this talk is not true. This is part of their sick mind." -
The end of Paul.
Kat's positive attitude and influence in the book pretrays him as a true leader. He is the last of Paul's friends to die and afer his dealth, Paul finds that there is nothing else to live for. "I believe that a man is the strongest soldier for daring to die unarmed." -
Paul is the Hero.
Paul and Kat go on a mission, Kat gets shot in the shin and Paul carries him back, but not long after, Paul realizes that Kat had been shot in the head. "A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer."

Paul is left alone.
Paul is the only one left out of all his friends that is still alive. "We live in the trenches out there. We fight. We try not to be killed, but sometimes we are. That's all." -
Paul dies.
Paul's friends had died just before he did, but now he is gone. "And our bodies are earth. And our thoughts are clay. And we sleep and eat with death." -
War ends
