Woolen Act
The woolen act made it so wool and other unprocessed goods couldn't be manufactured outside of England. This means the colonies could not buy wool and could only sell. resulting in everyone having to buy something very essential like clothing, from the British. This was because no one else had any, which makes America even more dependent on the British.
-made it so the Americans still highly depended on the British
-made England the only clothing maker
-left colonists even more mad at British -
French & Indian War (1754-1763)
The french and Indian war was fought between the french and the British. The main things they were fighting over were things like land and alliance with the natives. the biggest thing was the north american trade route. they both wanted control over it for the trade with places like America.
-the British blamed America for war
-America had to pay $8 billion
-Caused Americans to get very mad
-increased taxs -
Writs of Assistance
The writs of assistance were a huge part of making the Americans angry with the British. those allowed trade ships to get searched at any given time for illegal items such as tea outside the monopoly, or goods that have not been taxed yet. then once and if they found any, they would keep them until the taxes were paid on the item or until the holding time ran out.
-allowed British to search any ship
-enforced stronger tax rules
-made it harder to smuggle goods to and from America -
Sugar Act
The sugar act placed a tax on all sugar. the British refined the molasses act and made it illegal to buy sugar from anyone except them. Quartering Act
The Quartering Act made it so Americans must house and feed British soldiers. This took a most direct hit on taverns. This is because they were one of the few places that has extra rooms in which soldiers could stay in. Since the soldiers took up most of the rooms the tavern had little to no rooms to rent out costing them their jobs.
- most taverns went bankrupt
- people had no place to go and drink after work because soldiers were there
-more troops were sent over then their was room for -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston tea party was a very important event. Since the Americans were so upset about the tea monopoly, they decided to rebel against the British. the main group that took charge of this event was the Sons of Liberty. Tea Act
Due to the danger of Bankruptcy, the British East India Co. was granted a monopoly for the sale of tea in America. This was to makeup for the poor investment of the Dutch. most Americans did not like the tea they were being sold and many eve stopped drinking it. this provoked people like John Hancock to come in and sell their own tea regardless of the ban on outside tea
-influenced taring and feathering
-angered Americans
-lead to Boston tea party -
Intolerable Act
As a result of the Boston tea party, a set of harsh rules were made called the Intolerable acts. These included things like the Boston port act, Mass gov tea act, and the Quebec act. these things alone would not have been as bad by them self's but they were all set in place at once which made it very hard on Boston and the places around it. the troop presence was once again increased which the Americans did not take lightly
-merchants refused to join boycotts
-places were hesitant to provide aid -
Townshend Act
The Townshend act was one of the last things before the revolution. almost like the straw that broke the camels back. this was a series of laws placing taxes on things like glass, lead, and paint. these were not as bad since people were not buying these things everyday and most only had to buy them once or twice. out of all of the taxes these were the most reasonable in efforts to help pay off the war debt.
-Americans were mad
-boycotts
taxes were still not being paid
