Pilgrims arrive in Plymouth
Another successful English colony. Unlike Jamestown, the Plymouth colony was centered on religion rather than profit.

Bacon's Rebellion
Bacon led a large group of frontier settlers to overthrow Governor Berkeley. Bacon's Rebellion showed the tension between the frontier settlers and the Native Americans. It also showed that rebellion was possible in the colonies.

A war between the English and the French that translated to fighting in the colonies. The war that pretty much removed the French from the New World. England accumulated a massive debt that required them to break promises they made with the colonies.

Sugar Act
One of the acts passed by Parliament to pay for the debt that England accumulated during the French and Indian War (Seven Years' War). This angered the colonists who believed they were exempt from the tax since they used their own troops to fend off the French.

Stamp Act
Another tax passed by Parliament to pay for the French and Indian War (Seven Years' War). This act taxed all print documents. This greatly angered the colonists who protested against the act. This act led to the colonists froming the Stamp Act Congress.

Townshend Act
Parliament stated that they had ultimate authority over colonies. The acts also added taxes that were to be used to pay the governors. The colonists ignored the act and continued to answer to their local legislature.

Boston Massacre
British soldiers fired into a mob of protesters. This outraged the colonists who started to plan larger scale demonstrations of resistance. One of these is the Boston Tea Party.

Boston Tea Party
Colonists lead by Samural Adams board British East India Company ships and destroyed the tea. This angered Parliament which passed the Intolerable Acts to punish the colonists for their actions. This pushed the colonists towards Revolution.

Thomas Paine's Common Sense
Written by Thomas Paine, it critized British rule over the colonies. Stated that England violated the Social Contract and the colonists have the right to form their own government. Before this, colonists did not want to rebel from England. The pamphlet made colonists realize that they needed to their own government. Support for the Revolution increased dramatically.

The turning point in the Revolution. The victory at Saratoga proved that the Continentals could win in professional battles. France joined the war the next year due to the Continentals' victory.

Shays' Rebellion
Farmers were unable to pay their taxes and the Massachusetts court was repossessing their land. Shays' friends were some of the farmers faced with lossing their land. Shays led a large group of farmers to revolt against the Massachusetts courts. They managed to drive out the court. Showed the weakness of the Articles of Confederation.

Citizen Genet Affair
Image (Primary Source): French ambassador to the United States, Edmond-Charles Genet was tasked with rallying support for the French Revolution in the Untied States. Upon his arrival, the United States declared neutrality. Genet attempted to form an army of French Revolution supporters to head to France to help the Revolution, but the army fell apart. Damaged ties between the United States and France.

A rebellion in response to the whiskey tax. George Washington lead an army to put down the rebellion. Proved the strength of the Federal government.

Alien and Sedition Acts
The Federalist dominated government passed four acts designed to determine what was free speech and what was treason. The real purpose of the acts was to surpress the Democractic-Republicans. Backfired on the Federalists who lost a ton of public support.

Jefferson becomes president.
Also considered the Revolution of 1800. Jefferson became president of the United States and the Federal government shifted from being controlled by Federalists to Democratic-Republicans. A complete shift in the philosophy of government.

Treaty of Ghent
Ended the War of 1812. Declared "status quo ante bellum." Did not completely end the fighting. Helped inspire confidence in the Democratic-Republicans. Helped bring an end to the Federalist Party.

Battle of New Orleans
Word had not reached the New Orleans that the war was over. American forces led by Andrew Jackson engaged British forces. Jackson's forces crushed British forces forcing them to retreat out of New Orleans. Had no effect in the war, but instead inspired Patriotism and helped bring an end to the Federalist party.

Monroe Doctrine
Signed by President Monroe, it stated that any action by European countries to influence events in North and South America would be seen as an act of war. Europe wasn't scared of the United States, but England upheld the treaty and was using their navy to enforce it.

Andrew Jackson became president
Andrew Jackson became the first Democrat President. This brought an end to the Democratic-Republicans. Jackson will soon bring an end to the Federal banks in a crusade to end entitlement and corruption.

Whig Party is formed
The Whig would go on to become the politcal rival of the Democrats. Formed out of discontent with Jackson's presidency. They supported the "American System" which Jackson was a completely against.
