    Blacks could not rent or own land outside of the designated reserves.
  • Native (Black) Urban Areas Act No 21

    Native (Black) Urban Areas Act No 21
    The local authority was responsible for the blacks in its area. Native advisory boards regulated those who were not employed in that area. South Africa was divided into prescribed (urban) and non-prescribed areas and the travel between these areas was strictly controlled. This act would allow Whites more control over the Black South Africans.

    Industrial Conciliation Act No 11
    Blacks could not register for trade unions. Registration of black trade union was prohibited. This act basically reserved good jobs for the Whites.
  • Black (Native) Administration Act No 38

    Black (Native) Administration Act No 38
    Whenever he though it was necessary for the public interest, the minister could order any tribe, or section of the tribe, to move somewhere else in South Africa. The government said this was to prevent feelings of hostility between whites and blacks. This law was used to carry out forced removals.
  • Immorality Act No 5

    Immorality Act No 5
    Extra-marital affairs between whites and blacks was strictly prohibited. The whites wanted to keep their race "pure."
  • Representation of Blacks Act No 12

    Representation of Blacks Act No 12
    This act removed black voters in the Cape from the regular roll and put them on a separate roll. This left all the Blacks throughout the Union to be represented by 4 white senators.
  • Development Trust and Land Act No 18

    Development Trust and Land Act No 18
    This act expanded the reserves to 13.6% of the land of South Africa. The Department of Bantu Administration and Development was authorized to eliminate areas of black-owned land surrounded by white-owned land. The South African Development Trust was established and it could acquire land in the three provinces for black settlement.
  • Aliens Act No 1

    Aliens Act No 1
    Restricted and regulated the entry of certain aliens into South Africa. Regulated the right of any person to assume a surname.
  • Population Registration Act No 30

    Population Registration Act No 30
    Required people to be registered and identified from birth as belonging to one of four distinct racial groups. This particular act was more rigid than previous race classification acts.
  • Reservation of Separate Amenities Act No 49

    Reservation of Separate Amenities Act No 49
    Public facilities and transport to be reserved for particular race groups.
