Apartheid Laws Timeline (Collin Shumaker)

  • Black Land Act No. 27

    Black Land Act No. 27
This act "prohibited blacks from owning or renting land outside designated reserves." It severely limited the range and freedoms of blacks in South Africa, and was a major step in Apartheid.
  • Native (Black) Urban Areas Act No. 21

Native (Black) Urban Areas Act No. 21
This made the local authorities in the area responsible for the blacks, and numbers of blacks in their area. It also made enforced strict population control, and transportation between "prescribed and non-prescribed" areas became very difficult and restricted.
  • Industrial Conciliation Act No. 11

    Industrial Conciliation Act No. 11
This act "provided for job reservation," and it kept blacks out of trade unions; it kept them from joining ones and from starting their own ones. This Apartheid law further limited the rights of blacks in South Africa, with regard to their working conditions.
  • Immorality Act No. 5

    Immorality Act No. 5
This act prohibited "extra-marital intercourse between whites and blacks." It sought to keep the whites and blacks totally separate, also preventing the confusion of rights that go along with mixed children being born.
  • Riotous Assemblies Act No. 19

    Riotous Assemblies Act No. 19
This gave power to the Governor-General to censor information that might "engender feelings of hostility" between blacks and whites, or blacks and section of inhabitants of the Union. This further separated the whites and blacks of South Africa, and gave the Governor-General a good excuse to censor whatever he felt like censoring.
  • Representation of Blacks Act No. 12

Representation of Blacks Act No. 12
This act removed black voters from the common roll and were moved to a separate roll, and at that time the blacks in South Africa were only represented by 4 white senators. This further separated the black and white populations.
  • Development Trust and Land Act No. 18

Development Trust and Land Act No. 18
This act actually expanded the reserves for blacks in South Africa, and helped to eliminate 'Black Spots' (spots of black reserves surrounded by white-owned land). This wasn't too bad for blacks, but it did continue to enact the separation between whites and blacks.
  • Aliens Act No. 1

    Aliens Act No. 1
This heavily regulated and restricted immigration into South Africa, and it restricted their ability to adopt a surname. This really tried to maintain the white dominance in South Africa by restricted immigrants (specifically non-whites) a lot.
  • Aliens Regulation Act No. 26

    Aliens Regulation Act No. 26
This "provided for the registration and control of aliens." It, again, promoted the white dominance in South Africa
  • Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act No. 55

Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act No. 55
This act essentially made it illegal for a white person to marry someone of another race in South Africa. This is an extension of the Immortality Act
