Sharpeville Massacre
The Sharpeville Massacre occurred on 21 March 1960, at the police station in the South African town of Sharpeville in the Transvaal. After a day of demonstrations, the South African police opened fire on the crowd, killing 69 people. The protestors were peaceful, and the police was found innocent of the killings. -

Albert Luthuli wins the Nobel Peace prize
He was awarded the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the non-violent struggle against apartheid. He was the first African, and the first person from outside Europe and the Americas, to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He was a Zulu. -
The Soweto Uprising
a series of high school student-led protests in South Africa. Black high school students in Soweto protested against the Afrikaans Medium Decree of 1974 which forced all black schools to use Afrikaans and English in a 50-50 mix as languages of instruction. -
Steve Biko dies in police custody
He died shortly after arriving at Pretoria prison. It was discovered that his death was due to beatings and torture by the police who imprisoned and interrogated him for his role in the Soweto Uprising. His death strengthened anti-Apartheid movements. -
Desmond Tutu wins the Nobel Peace prize
Desmond Tutu received the 1984 Nobel peace prize for his nonviolent work against apartheid, the South African government's policy of racial segregation. Wanted a "democratic and just society without racial divisions".

Nelson Mandela release from prison
After serving 27 years in prison(some on Robben Island) for opposing the apartheid system, On 2 February 1990, State President F. W. de Klerk reversed the ban on the ANC and other anti-apartheid organisations, and announced that Mandela would shortly be released from prison. -
Nelson Mandela becomes president of South Africa
The ANC won 62% of the votes in the election, and Mandela, as leader of the ANC, was inaugurated on 10 May 1994 as the country's first black President. He ruled from 1994-1999.
