The art during Medieval Times was largely based on the Catholic Church. At this time almost everyone was part of the Catholic Church and the art was directly from this ideals. It was typically muted and there were no portraits painted during this time. However religious art was not the only art of this period, Gothic Art and Tessara were also artforms of this period. -

Baroque
Baroque art went back to an increased emphasis on religious art because this was during the time after the Counter Reformation when the Catholic Church wanted to gain back respect and gain faithful followers. However, art in this time period was also reflective of the absolute monarchs who had extreme wealth and privilege. Also during the Baroque period there was a new interest in nature and human understanding once again reflected in art of the time. -

Northern Realism
Northern Realist Art was influenced strongly by the Dutch who at this time were the most prosperous nations in Europe. It is very similar to Baroque art but lacked the splendour. The middle class was depicted now in their everyday lives. The paintings of this period also became more secular as opposed to the religious art of the previous periods. -

Neoclassicism
Keeping with the order and reason of the Enlightenment, Neoclassical art was a reaction against the Baroque and Rococo artforms. Neoclassicist artists went back to the Greek and Roman styles. The style was extremely serious and depicted classical figures. -
