  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri compromised was issued to balance power between free states and slave states. The Missouri compromise would officially make Missouri a slave state in 1820. In the North many opposed admitting new slave states since many were against it.
  • Treaty of Hildago

    Treaty of Hildago
    The Treaty of Hildago was the official to end the Mexican American War. The U.S. gained California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, most of Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming which is a lot of land. All of this new Territory would cause controversy among the states since it was lots of free land to open up new slave states and more plantations.

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise made California a free state, the remainder of the Mexican cession was divided into the two territories of New Mexico and Utah and were issued without slavery. This angered southerners a little bit since all of this new space to open up plantations could not be used for that purpose. Soon after the fugitive slave act was passed

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act issued the rule that all runaway slaves must be returned to their master, even if it was a free state they still had to be returned. This caused the north to turn into a hunting ground for slave bounty hunters which only added tension to the north and the south

    Uncle Toms Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin outraged slave owners due to its depiction of the harsh conditions and brutality of slavery. Many Southerners criticized Stowe's representation of slavery and said she was inexperienced with the practice of it.

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty. Due to the popular sovereignty vote it caused the massacre bleeding Kansas. The Massacre only caused further tension between the North and the South
  • Dred Scott Decison

    Dred Scott Decison
    In 1857 Dred Scott v Sanford ended. The Dred Scott Decision was passed. This meant the Supreme Court upheld slavery in the United States territories, denied the legality of black citizenship in America and they said the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional. Abolitionists got mad because they saw it as a way for the supreme court to stop the debate of slavery.

    John Hammond in a Speech said "cotton is king" basically meaning that cotton is the trucking the economy along a d is the most profitable thing in the country. This statement made the south demand for more slaves. This further angered the North because they were sick of slavery and because the south were kind of right about their statement
  • John Brown and Harper's Ferry

    John Brown and Harper's Ferry
    John Brown stockpiled enough guns to arm a small militia, and that's what he did. He took this small army to raid Harper's Ferry. He raided a federal arms factory their in an attempt to start an armed revolt of enslaved people and destroy the institution of slavery. It went down in flames and he lost the raid. Brown's raid helped make any further accommodation between North and South nearly impossible
  • Abraham Lincoln gets put in office

    Abraham Lincoln gets put in office
    Abraham Lincoln was a big guy on abolishing slavery. The election of him triggered the south so much because they thought he would abolish slavery.
