Captain Cook crossed Antarctica
James Cook was born in the Yorkshire village of Marton on October 27, 1728. His first experience at sea came at the age of 18. On November 23, 1772, Cook sailed out of Cape Town heading into the unknown waters to the south. On December 11 the crew of the ADVENTURE thought they found it. What they actually sighted was an iceberg and by the following day they found themselves at the edge of an endless pack of ice. On January 17, 1773, the ships became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. -
Thaddeus Bellingshausen
Thaddeus von Bellingshausen was born in 1778 and was a naval cadet at the age of ten. Bellingshausen was chosen to command the two ships, Vostok and the smaller and slower Mirnyi, with a total of 189 officers and crew when making his journey to Antarctica. In 1819 he crossed the Antarctica circle after Captain James Cook but he found land in Antarctica. -
Captain John Davis
Captain John Davis was born in England in 1884, he first went to sea at age 16, earning his first mate's certificate five years later. In London in 1907, he met Ernest Shackleton, who appointed him first mate on the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-09. After the captain resigned, Davis was given command for the voyage back to England.He was the first person known to set foot on Antarctica's untouched land in 1821. -
