Roald Amundsen
Born in Borge, Østfold, Norway, Amundsen began his career as a polar explorer as first mate on Adrien de Gerlache's Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897–1899.He left Norway in June 1910 on the ship Fram and reached Antarctica in January 1911. His party established a camp at the Bay of Whales before setting out for the pole in October. The party of five, became the first to successfully reach the South Pole on 14 December 1911. Douglas Mawson expedition

The expedition explored thousands of kilometres of previously unexplored regions, collected samples, and made important scientific observations. Mawson was the sole survivor of the three-man Far Eastern Party. Their deaths forced him to travel alone for over a month to return to the expedition's main base. -
Ernest Henry Shackleton
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was born February 15, 1874 in County Kildare, Ireland. In 1901 he joined Robert Falcon Scott on a trek to the South Pole, but fell seriously ill and had to return home. On August 1, 1914 he set sail with a crew onboard the Endurance, leading his own antarctic expedition. The ship became trapped in the ice, and it would be August 25, 1916 before all were rescued - everyone survived. He died on January 5, 1922 and was buried on South Georgia, Island. biography.com -
