Ancient Greece Timeline

  • Period: 492 BCE to 449 BCE

    The Persian Wars

    The Persian Empire tried to conquer Greece three times, but failed each time. The first battle was won by the Greeks because of their phalanx formation at Marathon.The second battle was when the Greek united to stop Xerxes from taking Athens. The third battle was in the sea where the Greeks sank 1/3 of Persian fleet. In the end, the Greeks won.
  • Period: 479 BCE to 431 BCE

    Athens 'Golden Age'

    The Golden Age was a time when Athens was very wealthy. Pericles, the leader of Athens, increased the democracy, created the strongest navy, and built many buildings, including the Parthenon. The art and theatre departments of the Athenians had especially developed at this time. Their building techniques had become refined throughout this time period.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    The Peloponnesian Wars

    Athens became too dominant as the leader of the Delian League. Some city-states wanted to leave because of the resentment toward the harsh fees. Sparta created the Peloponnesian League. Pericles, the leader of Athens, closes off the city walls for protection against the plague, but 1/3 of the population dies anyways. Sparta wins.
  • Period: 323 BCE to 31 BCE

    Hellenistic Period

    Alexanders empire combined the knowledge of 4 great empires (Greece, Persia, Egypt, India). This combination is known as Hellenistic culture. Hellenistic art is when the statue has a more natural look, showing movement. It shows more emotion opposed to a classical statue of someone who is modeling.
