    Yellow Fever is a disease carried by a mosquito just like Malaria and the Zika virus. The yellow fever begins with a fever, and some muscle/ joint pain, just like Malaria and Zika. Later as the liver and kidney begin to not work normally, people develop a yellow complexion. From there some people can experience vomiting and bleeding in every way. The US didn't know what to do to prevent the disease at this time, so many people died. Yellow fever is what lead to the discovery of the Zika Virus.

    The Influenza of 1918
    The influenza of 1918 is also commonly know as the Spanish Flu. Approximately 20-40 million people died from the Spanish Flu. The influenza was spread quickly back to the US when WW1 soldiers returned home from the affected areas. To prevent the disease, many scientists were trying to come up with a vaccine that could stop the spread. The government decided to put people who are infected into quarantine and band all public gatherings. Video

    Penicllin
    Penicillin was the beginning of the antibiotic era. The discovery was made by Alexander Fleming, who saw that mold made a substance that dissolves bacteria. As time went on Penicillin started to be used for commercial purposes. The discovery of Penicillin helped change the world and developed a new technology. This new technology is now how we came up with our vaccines to help cure diseases like Polio, Ebola and hopefully help lead scientists to come to a vaccine for the Zika Virus.

    Malaria is a disease transmitted by a mosquito just like Zika. Malaria is a disease that affects the red blood cells. It is transmitted person by person by a particular type of mosquito with the Plasmodium Parasite. If infected with the disease you can develop a fever, headache, and chills. To prevent a huge spread of Malaria through the United States, people are advised to avoid mosquito bites when traveling and take a prescription drug before and during their vacation.

    Polio becomes the Worst Outbreak in Unites States history
    The Polio Outbreak of 1952 was the worst Polio outbreak in US history. Polio is a very contagious disease that can cause paralysis, breathing problems and sometimes death. The disease is spread among people through feces. At first the United States had little to any clue how to handle this outbreak, but only to spread awareness. As time went on in 1955 a safe and effective vaccine for Polio was created.

    AIDS Outbreak
    AIDS virus is when the immune system is too weak to fight off any infections, also known as the advanced stage of HIV. This advanced stage of HIV is generally known as the last and can allow the body to catch any infections and if left untreated results in death. To prevent AIDS from spreading so rapidly, people were advised to use protection or be absent from all sexual activity and not use the same drug equipment, like needles.

    H1N1 Pandemic
    The H1N1 Virus is also known as the Swine Flu. This disease is airborne and can get picked up by germs from anywhere. To prevent the spread of the Swine Flu, people were cautioned to stay home if they were sick, wash their hands thoroughly, contains an coughs or sneezing, avoid contact in very populated areas, and lastly reduce exposure in your household if any family member has had the flu. 60.8 million cases were reported; out of those cases 12,469 deaths occurred from the H1N1 influenza.
  • Chikungunya Virus

    Chikungunya Virus
    Chikungunya Virus was spread to the United States in 2014.This Virus is also spread by a mosquito. The virus is not deadly, and has little to no symptoms. The symptoms that can occur are the same for Zika in grown humans. To prevent the disease the US is just telling citizens to try and prevent mosquito bites as best as they can. No major precautions are being taken because this particular disease isn't extremely harmful.

    Ebola is a very deadly disease, that is caused by an infection given by a Ebola virus species. Ebola is transmitted by direct contact. The United States took measures into their own hands by trying to prevent the Ebola outbreak to spread even more to the US. Airports had new screening to identify passengers with any Ebola symptoms. Airports were also given a “no fly” list of people had been in Africa or in an area with Ebola. In 2014, 4,493 deaths were reported caused by Ebola Virus.
