James Marhall discovered a few flakes of gold near John Sutter's sawmill. Millions through the U.S. and around the world migrated to California in search of gold and job oppurtunities. Many who came did not find gold. However, the imigration resulted from the gold rush contributed the growth of cities and industries, as well as the establishment of a diverse culture of California.

The Missouri Compromise
Maine was amitted as a free state and Missoui as a slave state. The rest of the Lousianna Territory was divided at 36, 30. Slavery was legal south of the line and slavery was banned north of the line. (Slavery, Political)
