French Indian War
France and Great Britain were fighting in North America for control of the Ohio River Valley. The war lasted 9 years and was incredibly expensive. Great Britain started to tax the colonist heavily to pay off the debt. This led to the first major disagreement between the colonist and the crown. -
Quatering Act
This act said the colonist must find living quarters or a living space for the British soldiers. And as anyone would be, the colonist were very upset and saw this as another attempt at infringing on their rights. -
The Stamp Act
The stamp act was proposed as a another way to raise cash. The act required a government tax stamp on legal documents. This was the first time in history that the parliament had taxed Americans directly, and colonist protested this act with vigor. -
Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts were a series of 4 acts from the British. This was made to exert authority over colonist via taxing goods. Which were goods such as glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. And to the colonist, this was another reason to be frustrated, they saw it as another case of taxation without representation. -
Boston Massacre
Tensions was high back when this happened. If you were to refer to what happened before this on the timeline you would see why. A huge group of colonist were throwing snowballs. Also, seeing British soldiers on the streets made people furious, as they saw it as a reminder of British control and arrogance. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
Those in Massachusetts have been stocking up on gun powder and weapons, obviously preparing for something of war. In preparation, the British sent a group of officers to inspect the country side, while also sending out troops to intimidate them. The minutemen realized they were badly outnumbered, and then a shot rang out of the blue, and more followed. -
Battle of bunker hill
A colonial force led by Colonel William Prescott moved to to fortify the hills after General Gage was planning to occupy them. British troops led by General William Howe stormed the hill, as the colonist were firing at them but were short of ammo. The British won, but due to the brave defense of the colonist, this gave them confidence to fight the better trained British army. -
Declaration of independence
The colonist felt in their heart they were being mistreated and abused. And they hold the strong belief that they have the right to evolve and become independent. They had a lot of issues with the parliament of England, so they wrote a 'Declaration' to free themselves. -
Battle of Saratoga
This is known as the turning point of the revolutionary war. American defeat of the British army gave the patriots confidence helped to secure the support needed to win the war. American general Benedict Arnold was named a hero for his bravery on the field. -
The treaty of paris
The Americans negotiated a peace treaty with Britain. Due to the treaty, the British finally recognized the US as an independent nation. After the trouble with the taxes, the US promised to pay what Americans owed to British merchants.
