  • End of French and Indian War

    End of French and Indian War
    In the Treaty of Paris France lost all claims to Canada and gave Louisiana to Spain while Britain received Florida from the Spanish, Upper Canada and many other French holdings overseas.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    George III prohibited all settlement west of the Appalachian mountains without guarantees of security from local Native American nations. The intervention in colonial affairs offended the thirteen colonies to the exclusive right to govern lands to the west.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The first attempt to finance the defence of the colonies by the British Government. In order to stop smuggling and to encourage the production of British rum taxes on molasses were dropped The Act established a Vice-Admiralty Court in Halifax, Nova Scotia to hear smuggling cases without jury.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    They wanted to provide some of the costs for the the colonies army Parliament required all legal documents ,newspapers that required to use watermarked, or stamped paper and a levy was placed.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    Colonial assemblies required to pay for supplies to British garrisons. The New York assembly argued that it could not be forced to follow.
  • Virginian Resolution

    Virginian Resolution
    A protest against the Alien and Sedition Acts passed by Congress. It was made by James Madison and with Thomas Jeffersonwho wote a set of resolutions for Kentucky also.
  • Townshend Revenue Act

    Townshend Revenue Act
    Duties on tea, glass, lead, paper and paint to help pay for the administration of the colonies. John Dickinson publishesd a letter from a Philadelphia Farmer in protest. Colonial assemblies disaproved of taxation without representation.
  • Boston Massacre

    Anger against the British troops sent to Boston to maintain order and to enforce the Townshend Acts.
  • Burning of the Gaspee

    Burning of the Gaspee
    The revenue ship sailed aground near Providence Rhode Island and was burnt by locals who were angered by the enforcement of trade legislation.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    To support the East India Company. Parliament took away its tea from import duties and allowed the Company to sell its tea directly to the colonies. Americans didnt like what they saw as an indirect tax to support a British company.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Angered by the Tea Acts. The American patriots disguised as Mohawk Indians dump about $15,000 of East India Company tea into the Boston harbour. The Boston Harbour was shut down beacuse the tea caused it to smell. It was also shut down until the British East Indian Company's tea was paid for. This was the first major act of defiance by the American colonist.
  • Continental Congress

    September 5, to October 26, 1774
    Carpenter's Hall was also the seat of the Pennsylvania Congress. All of the colonies except Georgia sent delegates. These were elected by the people, by the colonial legislatures, or by the committees of correspondence of the respective colonies. The colonies presented there were united in a determination to show a combined authority to Great Britain.Colonial delegates meet to organize a opposition aganist the Intolerable Acts.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    First battle of the Revolutionary War between British troops and the Rebels (Americans) who had been warned of the attack by Paul Revere.
