French and Indian War
Know as the 7 year war but lasted 9 years. It costed the British a lot of money because they had to pay for the war. It costed the British to face debt which led to the American Revolution. They were desperate to over come the debt they faced. The French and Indian War was said to have more deaths than the American Revolution. -
Stamp Act
There was tax on paper items and 50 paper documents. It required them to pay tax on pieces of paper they printed. Colonists were upset tax was passed without the consent of colonial assemblied. They started the Stamp Acts to gain more money. It led to the Stamp Act Congress. Even playing cards were taxed. -
Stamp Act Congress
Meeting held with representatives from British colonies in North America. It was the first Congress of the American Colonies. It was the first attempt at colonial unity against the British. They wanted to come together. They gathered to protest against the new taxation put in place by the British. The Stamp Act effected everyone in the Colonies. -
Quartering Act
They provided items they needed to the soliders. It provided housing, food, and transportation to the soldiers. Colonists were required to provide food and shelter for the soldiers. The colonists did not think it was fair to give up their items for the soldiers. They did not want to use their own goods and shelter for the soliders. This showed the British authority over the colonies. -
Townshend Duties
Colonists were required to pay tax on imported goods including lead, paint, paper, and tea. Some viewed the taxation as an abuse of power. It was introduced by Charles Townshend. He wanted to tax the Americans to make it fair to the colonists. The money collected from the tax was used to pay British colony officials. -
Boston Massacre
Conflict between colonosts and Redcoats where 5 colonosts were killed. (Paul Revere's engraving) Caused by the heavy tax set in place by the Townshend Acts. Things were thrown and shots were fired. Shots were fired by British soldiers in the streets of Boston which sparked the American Revolution. The men involved were sent to a trial and found guilty. -
Tea Act
Lowered the cost of tea, but it was formed to bail out the British East India Company. It angered colonosts because they were against all British taxes. The Tea Act helped their sales flourish. This event was one that led up to the Revolutionary War. The Tea Act helped them out of the debt they were in. -
Boston Tea Party
Protest against the taxation. They wore head dresses. They did it so they would remove the tax. Attacked the merchant ships in the Boston Harbor. They threw 342 chests of tea into the harbor. This cost the British a lot of money and loss. -
1st Continental Congress
Meeting in Philly. Created a list of grievance. Wanted to repeal most acts since 1763. Met over measures imposed by the British government on the colonies in response to their resistance to the new taxes. They gathered to discuss the Intolerable Acts. The Congress wanted to be seen as a united congress. -
Intolerable Acts
Led to the 1st Continental Congress. Helped cause the American Revolution. Series of laws/acts issued by the British Parliament. British closed the ports of Boston and did not allow any imports in. The laws passed were used as a punishment for the colonists that threw their tea into the harbors.
