    The Seven Years War

    The French and the British fought over American soil.
  • Treaty of Hubertusburg Ended the Seven Years War

    the Seven Years' War was settled by the Treaty of Hubertusburg. The British had the French give up their land and they did. Britain became the greatest colonial power.
  • The Stamp Act

    The tax stamps were put on 54 kinds of papers, including playing cards, newspapers, wills and licenses. The colonists did not like this at all.
  • The Townsend Act

    This act placed taxes on tea, glass, paper, and paint. Many colonists refused to pay the taxes or to buy any goods made in England.
  • Fighting Breaks out

    Fighting erupted between colonists and the British army in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts starting the Revolutionary War.
  • The Declaration of Independance

    The Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson
  • The French Recognized the power in the US

    Following a British defeat, the French granted diplomatic recognition to the new United States.
  • Articles of Confederation

    Many wanted to create a republican form of government, in which people elect officials to make decisions for them. However, this was balanced by a fear of a strong central government. What resulted was a document that loosely united the 13 independent states. It failed because of a lack of central government.
  • The Treaty of Paris

    Ending the American Revolutionary War between Britain and the United States of America.
  • The Constituiton

    Created a federal system in which national governments and state governments shared power. Introduced the executive branch (presidant), legislative branch (elected representatives in the Senate and House of Representatives), and the judicial branch (Supreme Court and other courts.)
  • The Bill of Rights

    As promised during negotiations over ratification, the new Congress proposed 12 amendments to the Constitution. The states approved 10 of the amendments. Together, these amendments became known as the Bill of Rights.
