1817 was the start of the "Erie canal" system. It starts in Buffalo then goes to Toledo. It became a major transportation source. It also sparked up urbanization, which is a positive business effect. -
Florida bought
America bought Florida from Spain. Spain sold it out of fear. We now control the entire east coast. -
Missouri Compromise
Missouri becomes a slave state. Maine becomes a free state. New rule; any state created South of the line becomes a slave state. Any state created North of it, becomes free. -

The Second Great Awakening was a religious revival movement. It started in the 1830's. It basically evangelized the West. It helped people have more faith and turn to Christian ways. -
Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears was a part of Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Policy. The Cherokee's were forced to leave their homes and move elsewhere. They were forced to give up their land of the Mississippi River. -
Westward Expansion
Texas and Florida were created as states. This added on to Westward Expansion. The U.S began along the east coast and is now spreading Westward. -
Texas Annexation
In 1845, Texas was annexated. It was the annexation of Texas to the United States of America as the 28th state. This act quickly led to the Mexican-American War. -
Steel Plow
John Deere created the steel plow in 1846. This was a tool that helped with farming. It made it easier and it was a success. -
Potato Famine
In 1846, the Irish suffered a potato famine. They were starving. They then moved to the United States. They brought their culture along with them. -
Mormon Migration
The Mormon migration took place in 1847. This was a religious persecution and they migrated west. Brigham Young led them. -
Mexican Cession
The Mexican Cession is the huge tract of land that the US got from Mexico as a result of the Mexican American War. It is significant for two reasons. First, it greatly enlarged and enriched the United States. Second, by obtaining the Mexican Cession, the US moved closer to the Civil War. The US had to decide whether the territories organized from the new land would be slave or free. -
California Gold Rush
James W. Marshall founded gold which sparked up the California Gold Rush. Thousands of people came to California because of it. The population grew. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848, ended the Mexican-American War in favor of the United States. The war had begun over a territorial dispute involving Texas. The treaty added 525,000 square miles to United States territory -
California becomes State
California becomes the 31st state in the union on September 9, 1850. Most newly gained regions take a long period of time before they reach a huge amount of people living there to become a state. However, with the Gold Rush in 1849 causing thousands of people to go to California, plus congress debating whether or not to allow slavery in new territories, Congress allowed California to jump straight to full statehood. -
Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase settled the main boundaries of the USA. The United States agreed to pay Mexico 10 million dollars to gain a portion of Mexico (now Arizona and New Mexico). Gadsden’s Purchase provided the land necessary for a southern transcontinental railroad.
