The Proclamation of 1763
Issued by King George lll after Great Britain gained French territory in North America after the end of the French and Indian War. It states that the colonists could not buy or sell land west of a line along the Appalachian Mountains. -
Taxes
The colonists paied taxes to Britain to pay for the damages of the French and Indian War. There were taxed on ships' papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, stamps, tea, sugar, other publications, and playing cards. -
Sugar Act
A law passed by the British Parliament that the colonies had to pay taxes on sugar and molasses when it's imported to the colonies. -
The Boston Massacre
British soldiers shot and killed 4 people while being harassed by a mob in Boston. -
Boston Tea Party
The colonists dressed up like Native Americans and dumped 18,000 pounds of tea in the Boston Harbor. -
Boston Blockade
The British Parliament closed the port of Boston and demanded the city's residents to pay nearly $1 million worth of tea dumped in the Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party. -
Intolerable Acts
Laws passed by the British Parliament after the Boston Tea Party. King George lll was infuriated by the Boston Tea Party and shut down Boston Harbor. -
Continental Congress
A convention of delegates from a number of British American colonists at the height of the American Revolution, who acted for the people of the 13 Colonies. -
The Declaration of Independence
The one of the most important documents in American history. All 13 colonies declared independence from Great Britain and its rules.
