The Navigation Acts
The Navigation Acts were laws passed by England to maintain control over Colonial trade. The acts made colonists buy English good and limited trade between the colonies and other countries. -
Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 declared all land taken by the British from the French west of the Appalachian Mountains to go to the Indians. This prevented European populations from densing in the middle and western parts of America. -
Writs of Assistance
The Writs of Assistance gave British officials the right to search any home or business for smuggled goods without reason. This caused protests throughout the Colonies which led to it being repeakealed -
Treaty of Paris of 1763
The document that ended the war between the British and French over the Ohio River Valley. This treaty ended French power in North America, expanded British territory, and increased debt. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act was passed to tax sugars bought by the Colonies. This caused the Colonies to protest the tax which caused it to be repealed 2 years later. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act cause all documents, including newspapers, paper, mail, letters, etc., to be taxed when bought in the Colonies. This caused the Colonies, once again, to protest which led to the act being repealed a year later. -
Quartering Act
The Quartering Act forced all Colonists to take in any British soldier that wished to stay at their home, this included feeding them, and housing them. This caused protests, which ultimately led to the act being repealed. -
Stamp Act Congress
The Stamp Act Congress was a meeting held by British representatives in the Colonies about taxation on the Colonies. This caused alarm in the Colonies. -
Declaratory Act
This act stated that the British government had supreme authority over the Colonies. The Colonies ignore this act and the struggle for independence begins. -
Townshend Acts
This act allowed the British to tax goods before they got to the Colonies. This caused the Colonies to begin making their own things and caused more smuggling. -
The Boston Massacre
After being cornered British soldiers fire into a crowd of rowdy unlawful protesters. After killing 5 Colonials mass protests arise across the Colonies and the British send more troops to settle the dust before war starts. -
Tea Act
The British remove all taxes but the tea act, this causes protest and the Boston Tea Party. -
The Boston Tea Party
After the Tea Act was passed the colonists were outraged so on a winter night the sons of Liberty gathered and infiltrated a British ship and threw 1 million dollars worth of tea in the Boston Harbour. -
Coersive Acts
These acts were passed to punish the Colonists for The Boston Tea Party. These acts included shutting the Boston Harbour down and cutting off trade into that port. This caused mass uproar and protests in Boston and the rest of the Colonies. -
The First Continental Congress
The First Continental Congress was the first organized meeting of delegates from all across the Colonies. All but Georgia attended, the Congress banned all trade with Britain and plants seeds for a future independent governemnt. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
After creating a militia to defend the Colonies from war with the British, a group of Minutemen and British soldiers meet and fire upon one another, throughout the rest of the day they fight as the British are pushed back to Boston as Minutemen forces gradually grew. This is the start of a war. -
The Second Continental Congress
The Congress meets again May 10, 1775, they appointed George Washington as the general of the newly established army. They also authorize the printing of money to pay soldiers. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill was a battle in where 2,200 British soldiers attacked Minutemen on top of a hill. This attack led to the deaths of 400 Minutemen, and 1,000 British; though the British did take the hill the Americans counted it as a victory as their casualties were much lesser than that of the British. -
Olive Branch Petition
This petition was a final attempt to broker peace between the Colonies and Britain before a war started. The King of Britain turned it down and that threw chances of peace out the window. -
Common Sense
This was a book written by Thomas Paine, which was made as somewhat propaganda to persuade people into joining the patriot cause. This worked and many changed their minds and changed from loyalist or neutral to patriot. -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence made the Colonies independent from Britain. This is the document that created America.
