LIncoln spent six months each year riding the circuit, or traveling through the state to try cases as a lawyer. LIncoln liked to meet and help people. He was famous for being hard-working and honest. -

LIncoln believed that the united states stood for freedom for all. He wanted to become a Untied States senator. In 1858, Lincoln debated Stephen Douglas who was also a candidate for the senate from Illinois. The two men made speeches in seven cities, debating the issue of slavery. -

Civil War begins
LIncoln's union army fought the Southern Confederate armies. Many soldiers were hurt and killed in the battles, One such battle was in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1863, a ceremony was held to dedicate a cemetery on the Gettysburg battlefield. Lincoln made a famous speech that has become known as the gettysburg address. -

LIncoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation
President Lincoln read the first draft of this document to his cabinet members on July 22, 1862. After some changes, he issued the preliminary version on September 22, which specified that the document would take effect on January 1, 1863. Slaves that were in the confederate will know be free. -
Lincoln Re-elected for president of united states
LIncoln was re-elected president because he was nominated by the National Union party. Only one person, George B Mclellan, ran against him and on November the 8th, LIncoln won with over 400,000 votes. He was the first president to be re-elected since 1832. -

Around 10 PM John Wilkes Booth entered Lincoln's private box unnoticed and shot the president with a single bullet in the back of his head.
