President Garfield was assassinated by a man wanting political office but wasn't qualified. The Act was passed to set up civil servce exams for public office. -
Interstate Commerce Act
Required railroad rates to be "reasonable and just." Help to set up price controls. -
McKinley Tariff
Put a tax on all goods manufactured by a foreign country. Goal was to put an emphasis on buying American goods. Still relevant today as we continue to pass laws to ensure that American products and industries flourish. -
Sherman Antitrust Act
Tried to outlaw and destroy trusts, along with other devious means of eliminating competition. It was vaguely worded and therefore impossible to enforce. -
Plessy vs. Ferguson
"Seperate but equal." Supreme court decision that allowed segregation if an equal opportunity is given to both races. Never ends equally. -
U. S. S. Maine
The U. S. S. Maine was a warship that exploded and killed 260 American men. After the explosion of the ship, American became part of the Spanish American war because they blamed the explosion of the Spanish. -

Wilmington Race Riot
Black men are attacked after voting by white men outside the government building with rifles. Fourteen black men are killed. It was the rise of the Jim Crowe Laws. -
Open Door Policy
Created because the U.S. wanted a sphere of influence in China, but didn't have access to one. Created a new policy allowing the U.S. to compete with other large imperial powers for global controls. Leads to conflicts in China and rivalries with other imperial powers. -
Galveston Hurricane
Deadliest hurricane in U.S. history. Between 6,000-12,000 dead. Survivors moved to the Midwest. -

Roosevelt extended the Monroe doctrine with his speech about American power. -

The Espionage and Sedition Acts said that no one could speak or act disloyal in any way toward the Constitution. -
18th Ammendment
Prohibited sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. -
19th Ammendment
gave women the right to vote. Women had worked in many different jobs during WWl, so it was a natural step. -
Scopes Monkey Trial
John T. Scopes was tried for teaching Darwin evolution in a high school classroom. He was found guilty and fined, but the decision was set aside because of a technicality. -

Many Americans were strarving, homeless, and jobless. Women lost jobs to men. Children stopped going to school so that they could work. Farmers experienced low prices. Hoovervilles were created. -
Hawley - Smoot Tariff
Raised tariff of 20,000 different goods to protect the production of the American products. Led to many boycotts as the tariff reached as high as 59% on some goods. Claimed to be counter-productive as many countries wouldn't deal with us.This still hapepens today, if the tariff is too high, countries won't give us the goods. -

Farmers had cleared large areas of the Great Plains for agriculture. Drought struck and prairie winds caused huge dust storms. Many farmers lost everything and left the plains. -

Germany signed this pact with Russia saying that Rusia would not interfer in Poland if Germany wouldn't interfer in the Baltic States. -

Terrorists coordinated a series of attacks on the U.S. Two hijacked airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center Towers. -
Patriot Act
stands for Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act. The act was signed into law by George Bush after the terror attacks of 9/11.
