Seneca Falls Convention
This is the 1st women's rights conference in America held in Seneca falls NY, in 1848. It is a 2 day long event with around 500 attendants. This conference had many supporters including Elizabeth Stanton, and Fredrick Douglas -
The Pony Express
This was spurred from the Civil War, and the demand for faster communication with the West. The riders would cover 250 miles within 24-hours. This was a very dangerous operation. Even though it was hazardous, only one rider was ever lost. They then invented the Transcontinental RR to replace this. -
Ft. Sumter
This is known to be the start of the civil war. By the time this battle started, 7 states had already seceded. This battle had no casualties except for one horse. this was the Souths first victory! -
First Battle of Bull Run
This is the Battle that is known for being the first full scale battle. the union was led by George McCllean however, they were untrained and didnt realize how hard the south was going to be to defeat. This battle was an awakening for the Union. it was also another Confederate victory. -
The Homestead Act
The law gave 160 acres of land free to anyone willing to settle in the West, provided they built a home and farmed the land for five years. There were conditions however. You would need to promise to improve the land you were given. You were also required to file an application. This was taken use of for many people. It was also a draw to encourage people to move out west. -
Battle of Antietam
This battle is the Souths first attempt to invade the North. the three main areas for fighting were The Corn Field, The Bridge, and The Sunken Lane (Bloody Lane). This day was known as the bloodiest single day battle of the war. Between 20,000 and 25,000 casualties. In the end, this battle was a draw. -
Freedman's Brueau
The Freedman's brueau was an act meant to help "displaced southerners" this was mainly subjected to blacks. it helped over 3000 schools, and over 150000 people overall. The point of this was to provide food, cltohing, education, medical help, etc. to those who were discriminated against. -
13th Amendment Ratified
The 13th Amendment was passed in order to abolist slavery. This was the first amendment passed in th United Staes during reconstuction. This ended the argument of weather or not slavery should be legal in the US. -
Johnsons Imeachment
Andrew Johnson became president after Lincons assaination. However he wasnt favored by the people. He failed to abide by the tenure of office act, and was subjected to impeachment. His trial was held and he was impeached in febuary of 1868. he was the first president to be impeached. -
Completion of the Transcontinental RR
This was to take place of much less efficent travel methods. It was made when they realized that they needed easier and faster deliveries. One side started in the west, and one in the east. They met in Promontory Point, Utah. This was a huge discovery that changed the course of history. -
Rockefeller Incorporates Standard Oil
John D Rockefeller founded hte Stanard Oil Trust. He dominated 95% of production, refining, and markeing of oil in the US. This was complete in 1870. -
Civil Rights Act
This may not be considered exactly a part of the Jim Crow Era officially, but i belive it does. this is when congressed passed the act. it prohibited the discrimination of public accommodations. This included inns, theaters, or andy other places of public amusement. -
Jim Crow Laws
We do not know the exact date that these were passed but we know alot about them. We know that these were all about segregation. Every state had their own laws. Some exaples would be like: blacks and whites could tsit in the same train cars. Blacks and whites couldnt share the same appartment complex. Or backs and whites couldnt marry each other. These were the Jim Crow Laws. -
Skyscrapers
Skyscrapers were invented in 1884. They were created to save space and to build more with less space. these took off and are now built all around the world. They were invented by William LeBaron Jenney. He definatly pushed the limits of design. -
Statue of Liberty
The Staute of Liberty was dedicated to the United States on October 28, 1886. It was a gift from France marking the 100 year anaversary of the Revolutionary War. it was built by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. -
Annie Moore through Ellis Island
Annie Moore was the first person to travel though Ellis island. She came with her little siblings, and was gifted a 10$ coin and a staute. This was January 1, 1892. -
Ellis Island opens
Ellis Island opened on January 1st, 1892. This also happens to be when the first person, Annie Moore, travled through the isalnd. This was a huge turning point around the time, and many people traveled to America through Ellis island. -
Klondike Gold Rush
In 1896, gold was discovered in Alaska. At the time, Alaska seemed like a foolish purchase. This quickly turned around after it was used for many valuable reasourses. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
Plessy V. Ferguson was the lankmark decisiton made of by United States Supreme Court in 1896. This was upholding the constitutionality of of racial segregation. This is the "separate but equal" mentality. -
Sinking of the Maine
The ship exploded from the inside out in Havana, a Cuban harbor. 260 soldiers were dead, and it was blaimed on Spain. This is considered the spark of the war -
Spanish-American war begins
This war was started by congress. The 2 countries involved were Spain and America while most of the fighting happened in Cuba and the Philippines. The results gave Cuba independence and made the US a world power. -
Louis Armstrong
Louis was born on aug. 4, 1901. He was a young trumpet player who became the most influential jazz player. He also was famous for his unique voice, and piano style. -
The Panama Canal
The Panama Canal was created to save traveling time around South America. America agreed to pay 10 million with an additional 250,000 a year. This was a huge invention. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
The Lusitania was a passenger ship carrying almost 4500 things of ammunition. in may of 1915, Germany torpedoed this ship. this was one thing that lead to americas involvement in world war I. -
White House Picketing
Many women began to peacefully picket the white house. Women became the first party to employ non-violent protest techniques. because of this, many women would get arrested for "obstructing traffic" which was absurd. -
Start of Battle of Belleau Wood
This is the first large scale battle fought by Americans soldiers in WWI. Germans pushed into France and so this war was a fight to halt the German advance. -
End of The Battle of Belleau Wood
This was an allied victory but about 10,000 were dead, wounded, or missing. This battle should many, that American was committed and would do whatever it takes to win. -
End of WWI
The Treaty of Versailles was the official end to the war. The big four were the ruler of America, France, Italy, and Britain. The point of the treaty was for the four to come up with terms for Germany, and to put an end to the war altogether. -
Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was an artistic revival. Racial tensions caused violent and deadly riots throughout the united states. This was caused by the "Great Migration" which is the reason why so many african americans lived in NY at this time. -
Women Win Suffrage
The 19th amendment was passed in 1919, and ratifed in 1920. This gave women full right to vote in any state. This was a huge change for a lot of states, while others had allowed women to vote for a very long time. -
19th Amendment
For many years, women fought for their rights. we did not get voting rights until 50 years after all men. representatives voted for federal suffrage amendments but the senate voted it down. we finally got the 19th, women rights, amendment in 1920. -
Scopes Trial
John Scopes was a teacher who was arrested for teaching evolution in schools. He took the case to trial under the help of Darrow. He was the most famous trial lawyer of the era. scopes was found guilty and was fined $100. -
Buck vs. Bell
The buck vs bell case, was a court case that regared eugenics. This was deciding weather or not a woman should be sterilized agaisnt her will. She lost the case, and she was sterilized.
