Concessions given to the South post reconstruction. They included federal funds for internal improvement and southerners in cabinet positions. -
Pendleton Civil Service Act
President Garfield was assassinated by a want that wanted political office. After his death, congress passed this act to set up civil service exams for public office. -
Interstate Commerce Act
Required railroad rates to be "reasonable and just". It helped set up price controls. -
Sherman Anti-Trust Act
Tried to outlaw and destroy trusts, along with other devious means of eliminating competition. It was vaguely worded and therefore impossible to enforce. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
146 workers were killed in the fire. It began a movement to increase safety regulations for factories. -
Election of 1912
Roosevelt represented the Bull Moose Party. Taft represented the Republicans and Wilson the Democrats. The Republican vote was split between Roosevelt and Taft which resulted in Wilson winning. -
Black Tuesday
The stock market crashed. Investors began to sell everything. By November, 30 billion in wealth had dissapeared. -
Executive Order 9981
Made by Harry Truman following World War 2. It completely desegregated the military. -
Election of 1960
Election between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. It was the first election to have a televised debate, which Kennedy won because of his poise and good looks. Kennedy won and became the first catholic president. -
Election of 2000
Al Gore represented the Democrats. George W. Bush represented the Republicans. Closest election in presidential history. Bush barely won.
