  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Supreme court rules to end segregation in school. This creates diversity and ends racial segregation. You have the right to any education no matter your race.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Also known as Public Law 101-467. This act changes terminology from handicap to disability. Also adding autism and traumatic brain injury to be eligible under IDEA. Changing the term from handicap to disability opens so many doors for students. If a student is labeled as handicapped it insinuates a student does not have the ability to do something however if we use a more friendly terminology like disability the student will be able to accomplish the task just may need additional assistance.
  • Univeral preschool

    Georgia becomes the first state to have universal preschool starting at age four. The parents have the choice of whether their child attends and now over half of the states four-year-olds attend.
  • Columbine- school shooting

    Columbine- school shooting
    Two high school students at Columbine HIgh school go on a killing spree. Killing 15 students and wounded an additional 23 at the Littleton, Colorado school, making it the nation's deadliest school shooting incident. Schools now have higher security and stricter regulations however school shootings are still occurring at an alarming rate in this Nation.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    Signed by President George W. Bush this act holds schools accountable for the students achievement levels. This act protects all children in assuring them the best and fair education no matter their race or socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Higher education Act

    This expands education for low or middle-class education. This act provides funds for graduate students and increasing accountability. This act ensures that students have the right to education no matter their Socioeconomic status which helps students and families access higher education.
  • Virginia Tech University

    Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old student, at Virginia Tech university. Shot and killed two students in his dorm and then killing an additional 30 students inside a classroom. This then becomes the deadliest school shooting in United States history with the final death toll of 33 students.
    Less than a year later a former Virginia Tech student kills five and wounds 17 more at northern Illinois University.
  • AAMR to AAIDD

    American Association on Mental Retardation changed to American association on intellectual and developmental disabilities. Trying to get rid of the term mental retardation and this is a step by changing it to intellectual disabilities.
  • Sandy Hook

    Adam Lanza kills his mother then walks into Sandy Hook killing 20 children and six adults. Making this the second deadliest mass shooting by a single person in United States history. After this some schools, require students to not carry backpacks and placed bulletproof windows into their classrooms.
  • Students demand change

    Thousands of students walk out of classrooms demanding changes in gun laws. Why I found it important to mention some of our school shootings is because they keep happing and the government has not intervened or made it difficult to access guns. Students are no taking matters into their own hands and rebelling against the school system and protesting against the government.
