What they did not know is America bought a figurative and literal gold mine. It was vastly rich in recourced and turned out a profit many times over what we had origionally paid for it. -

She was forcefully removed from crown by a coup of people who wanted Hawai'i to annex with America. They saw that they could modernize and industrialize parts of Hawai'i while leaving the other parts to the dominant agricultural business and exporting, therefore expanding the economy and American influence. -
America claims Guam, Philippines, and Puerto Rico
America claimed the Philippines and Puerto Rico in the late 1890's. Guam did not come till WWII. Puerto Rico and the Philippines were gained as a result of the Spanish-American war. We aquired Puerto Rico very peacefull however the Philippines were another story. Feirce resistance was met. Rebels had fought the Spanish ever since their occupation and when the control was transferred to America, they fought out again. An Philippine-American war ensued lasting 2 years officially. -
Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders
A cavalry unit led by Theodore Roosevelt, they helped win many victories in the Spanish-American war. Key battles they fought in were the battles of Las Guasimas and San Juan Hill and the Seige of Santiago.
