American Art: Modernism, Regionalism, WPA
American Modernism was profoundly influenced by the Armory show in 1913 which showcased many of the avant gaurd European artists. Artists like Georgia Okeefe later took art in an abstract direction. Regionalism was a rejection of these European styles in an attempt to show truly American people in American art. Some deemed it overly nationalistic and compared it to German art of the Nazis. The WPA was a government program that employed artists in their craft during the great depression. -
