European settlement of Melbourne
Original site used for timber cutting, cattle grazing and as a brick-makers field. -
Parkland area reserved
The high-ground south of the yarra overlooking Melbourne was reserved as parkland for a future vice-regal residence. -
Boat houses constructed
Boat houses were established along the Yarra River and by 1895 six buildings were located to the east of the existing boat sheds. -
Yarra straightened and widened
The area was constantly flooded until it was straightened and widened from 1896-1900 to control flooding. -
Alexandra ave constructed
Alexandra ave was constructed along the river, dividing the parkland -
New recreation reserve
A new recreation reserve incorporating, Alexandra ave, South Yarra drv, and the gardens was created and named Alexandra Park. They featured a star-shaped flowerbed which was used for floral displays and symbolised the Federation Star, a popular emblem after Federation in 1901. -
Queen Victoria's memorial statue constructed
Unveiled at the south of the site. -
