    When Papa went into the woods to cut logs, a panther attacked his ox. Papa tried to defend the ox, but the ox mistook him for the attacker and gorred Papa's thigh and side. Mama had to shoot the ox to death in order to save Papa's life because the ox was confused and scared. Lucinda was scared because the next few days would determine if Papa lived or died because of his high fever.

    Theis was during the time when settlers started moving west from the east coast of the United States. A lot of people were moving into Texas and disobeying Mexico's laws. Santa Anna decides to use force to regain control. This started the Texas Revolution.

    The First Battle of the Texas Revolution
    The first battle in the Texas Revolution was on October 2, 1835 when the Mexicans wanted to retrieve a cannon they had given to the people in the town of Gonzales, Texas. These citizens of Gonzales used this cannon to defend themselves from Comanche attacks. The people refused to give up their cannon, and this led to the first battle of the Texas Revolution.

    Lucinda met Travis, the commander in the Battle of the Alamo, at the general store. Travis even talked to her, and he admired the diary. He told her that he also kept a daily diary.

    A messenger rode into Gonzales and told the citizens about the victory at San Antonio. The good news was that no one had been killed during the fighting.
  • The Stolen Pecans

    Green, Lem and Lucinda were heading home from gathering pecans when some volunteers asked them for some pecans. Lucinda gave the volunteers her bag. The other two volunteers stole Green and Lem's bag. They got really angry,and Lucinda would never trust another volunteer again.

    While Luncinda and Mittie were supposed to be multiplying by thirteens, rampaging volunteers stormed into every house and tried to steal supplies. Lucinda was brave when a man grabbed Mrs. Roe, and Lucinda grabbed the gun and wacked the attacker in the head and made a gash.

    When General Cos surrendered at San Antonio, he gave up the Alamo and all the weapons inside it. Only four Texians (Texans) were killed during the battle. There was a rumor that there were twenty cannons, some rifles, and gunpowder. These materials were important to the Texians.

    Willis returned from fighting at San Antonio. The whole family celebrated, and Mrs. Roe brought him a cake. Willis also spent the whole day telling tales about the battles that they fought. He also explained why he was so late coming home. It was because he stayed with Aunt Esperanza for three days because she wasn't feeling very well. Willis also took refuge in Aunt Esperanza's house during one of the battles.

    When life was just about to turn normal again, Willis left for San Antonio to fight. Even though Papa had lent him take a mule to ride on, he still found it very difficult to get to the Alamo. He insisted on walking all the way and finally got there.

    When Luncinda's family's wagon axle broke, they gave up hope and started walking back. Along the way back, they met Davy Crockett, and he helped them fix the broken axle, and they set off. When Lem saw Davy, Lucinda had to nudge his ribs to get him going because he couldn't believe that he was seeing the hero he had admired for so long.

    Santa Anna and his army arrived at San Antonio while the citizens and defenders took shelter in the Alamo. On that day the Mexicans raised the red flag indicating that no one in the Alamo would be left alive.

    William Barret Travis, a commander at the Alamo, wrote his famous "Victory or Death" letter in the Alamo. It was sent out on Febuary 24.

    At dawn, the Mexican army raided the Alamo in victory. The unprepared defenders afforded them a huge advantage. Travis was killed during the attack. The Mexicans made a hole in the northern wall and broke in. They won the battle in only ninety minutes.

    Uncle Isaac and Willis were killed during the battle. Lucinda received the news after the battle by Susana Dickson. Lucinda was told that her uncle and Willis died swiftly. Susana said that she never saw Lem while at the Alamo.

    Lucinda left Gonzales with her mama, Papa, and Green because Santa Anna would be in Gonzales the next day, and 99% of those who surrendered there were killed under the command of Santa Anna.
  • Remember the Alamo!

    Remember the Alamo!
    On April 21, 1836, Sam Houston noticed that Santa Anna had split troops and cornered himself near the Buffalo River. Sam Houston took the chance and attacked. The surprised Mexicans surrendered as the words "Remember the Alamo" cried out.
