Origins
Al-Qaeda in Iraq, also referred to as al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia, is a Sunni Muslim extremist group that seeks to sow civil unrest in Iraq. The group was established by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in 2003 in response to the U.S invasion of Iraq. Source -

Link To Bin Laden's Al-Qiada
Zarqawi officially vowed obedience to the al-Qaeda leader and groups became linked. This lead to a decrease in attacks on Shiite muslims. Source -
Women and Children
In late November, 2005, a young mentally handicapped woman was used by Al Qaeda to detonate an explosive belt, killing herself and seven other innocent Iraqis including a child. Al-Qaida in Iraq has continued a growing trend of using mentally handicapped women and young children as suicide bombers. Source -
Bombing of the al-Askari Mosque
Al-Qaida in Iraq bombed the al-Askari Mosque in Samara, Shiite Islam's holiest shrine in February of 2006. This bombing caused no injuries but severely damaged the holy site's golden dome. Source -
Death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed by a U.S airstrike. This lead to the end of the relationship between Al-Qiada and Al-Qaida in Iraq. Source -
Human Sheilds
When Coalition forces moved to disrupt Al Qaeda networks operating in Diyala province, central Iraq, on January 30, 2008, they encountered armed terrorists using women and children as human shields. Source' -
Current Activity
Al-Qaida is executing most of the high-profile attacks on Syrian military forces, including bombings in Damascus and Aleppo. At the same time, the migration from Iraqi targets has led to a decrease of Al-Qaida related violence on the Syrian boarder. Source -
Tikrit Prison Break
A prison break occured in Tikrit on the 27 of september 2012 that wass coordinated by Al-Qaida in Iraq, more than 80 convicted terrorists managed to escape in the ensuing gun battle. The prisoners were also able to escape with documents including pictures of inmates. Source
