The South Surrendered to the U.S.A. This was significant event cause this is when the war ended. The South surrendered but the US general didn't make them drop their swords or they didn't take anything he just let them on their way. The Southern soldiers cried and the U.S.A soldiers helped them out. The cause and affect was that the North won more battles and the South knew they couldn't win so they surrendered.
