Chattel Slavery
By the 1700s, the English incorporated slavery into the law. This meant it was now legal to own slaves and this was a lifelong sentence based on race. This was also now inheritable. The increase in the supply and demand of crops led to slavery. This is the wrapper of the tobacco, Virginia's cash crop. -
Stono Rebellion
Africans that survived the Middle Passage were miserable living as slaves in the English colonies. Some rebelled, ran away and even resisted recapture. One of the memorable rebellion, led by a literate slave named Jemmy, took place in South Carolina on September of 1739. -

Phillis Wheatly was a poet that was enslaved in New England, Boston. She was a poet that could fully read and write. Her poems depicted her Christian beliefs. This is a published book of her poems. -
The Revolution War
In this war in Yorktown, VA, black and whites fought alongside of one another. Some blacks chose to fight on the British side because they were promised freedom. Defining the Worth of Blacks
James Madison's Virginia Plan proposed a strong government that could over rule state laws. He wanted the more populated states to have more political power. By doing this he would ensure Virginia would dominate the political power that slavery was safe to continue. Congress wanted states to pay taxes based on the population of that state. Highly populated stated included slaves in the count, but did not think it was fair leading to the 3/5 compromise. Each slave is 3/5 of a white person. -
Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner that wanted to abolish slavery in Virginia. He wanted all the blacks to leave the state and more importantly leave the U.S. He was willing to do so even if it cost other slaveowners their wealth. He wanted the US to be ridded of slavery. A Southerner stated that by doing so would threaten the safety and success and wealth of the Southern states. This picture depicts that Southerner's thoughts.
