    Destruction of the Taíno

    Within 25 years, the native Taíno, who inhabited the island of Hispaniola when it was found by Christopher Columbus in 1492, were destroyed by the Spaniards.

    Discovery of Haiti

    Columbus arrvies to Hispaniola, where there are about 750,000 native inhabitants.
  • Jan 1, 1500

    Gold Discovered

    In 1500, the Spaniards discovered gold of the native people, the Taínos. The Spaniard tortured and killed the Taínos, in order to claim all their gold.
  • Jan 1, 1508

    Slaves are Imported

    African slaves were imported due to the drastic decrease in the Taíno population. This began in 1508 and very quickly the Africans became the primary labor source.

    First Slave Revolt

    On the plantation of Columbus's son slaves set fire to susgar equipment and escapes.

    Slaves Revolt

    7,000 African and native slaves escaped and ran to the mountains for shelter. Start up of Creole and Voodoo.
  • Island is Divided

    In 1697, Spain surrendered the western portion of the island to the French, which later developed into Haiti.
  • Slaves Converted to Christianity

    African slaves were forced to convert to Christianity to crush rebellion. Voodoo is used a sign of resistance and is banned .

    Produced 110,000 tons of sugar, 80,000 tons of coffee,and 2,000 tons of cotton, in this year alone.
