Hausa is present day Northern Nigeria, Northwestern Niger. Its population was 15 million. Hausa fell to Islam and the Fulani who took political power from Hausa.

The Mali empire was located in western Africa along the Niger river in Mali. Their most famous ruler was Mansa Kankan Musa I, and he lead the empire to conquer most of their territory. The empire was Islamic and was well known to the Islamic world and Europe.
