In Ghana they put slabs of salt on the side of the riverbank. They did this so the other traders didn't come in and steal their stuff. The other traders left a fair amount of gold so then they other people couldn't come in like the Ghana traders did. -

Ghana started building their empire it began in 800. A lot of trade in northern and southern Africa went through Ghana. Because of all of the gold and salt they had, the military protect the borders. -
Where Mali Lies
Mali is on the Niger River and is controlled by the people. After awhile they grew rich and was very powerful. Sundiata was the ruler of the empire and made the empire rise. -

Mansa Musa ruled Mali for 25 years. Mansa Musa led Mali to its wealth and power. Because of him, the Islam religion grew. -
Sundiata's Victory in Mali
As Sundiata grew up, he won Mali independence. In 1230 he conquered nearby kingdoms such as Ghana. After he did that, he took over salt and gold trades in Ghana. -
The rise of Songhai
As Mali grew, Songhai was becoming its rival. Mansa Musa brought in his other lands which weakened Mali and Ghana because they were under their territory. Songhai eventually came back around and gained their freedom just like Mali and Ghana did. -
When Songhai falls to different parts of Africa.
Songhai got other people taking over the salt mines. In that time, salt was a big trading supply so this was not good. It was hard to protect themselves because the Mocroccons had much better weapons then they did. -
The weapons they had for fighting
The weapons they had were not the best. They were not good for fighting because they were not strong enough. Eventually, they improved their skills.
