Advancements in Telescopes

  • World's First Telescope.

In 1609, Galileo Galilei invented the world's first telescope. He used this using the invention of "Danish perspective class", in addition to his prior knowledge of astronomy.

  • Chrisitan Huygens develops the tubeless telescope

Huygens knew that people were viewing from too far away, which would insinuate blockages or other things getting in the way. He devised the tubless telescope, in which he was able to view Saturn and its moons.
  • Newton builds a reflective telescope.

Following through on his thoughts the first reflecting telescope, the Newtonian Telescope was built in 1668. Newton's breakthrough was to use a large concave primary mirror to focus light onto a smaller flat diagonal mirror that projected an image into an eyepiece on the side of the telescope.
  • The first gigantic telescope was built in 1789

One major problem with telescopes back in the 16/1700's was the size of the telescope. UK inventor William Herschel saw this and devised a plan. Herschel solved an issue with the poor reflective quality of the speculum metal often used in Newtonian telescopes. He did this by simply omitting the diagonal mirror completely and tilting the primary mirror to allow the user to directly view the scene. With this, he was able to construct a 40ft reflecting telescope.
  • Hubble Telescope invented.

Designed by Nasa, the Hubble telescope was the clearest in its day. It was also the first telescope to be sent into space for viewing, which was a very insightful opportunity as you could get far more viewing perspective that was simply not attainable for the naked eye.
  • James Webb Telescope

The James Webb Telescope was a massive advancement in astronomy. With this, astronomers could not only view objects with much better quality, but they could also view objects from further away.
