Acts passed by Parliament beginning in 1763 and ending in 1774

  • Proclamation of 1763

This Act was passed to separate the British colonies on the Atlantic coast from the American Indian lands west of the Appalachian Mountains. The boundary was called the Proclamation line. The colonial response to this is that they rebelled against it because they said it took their rights from them and their rights to travel wherever they wanted.
  • Sugar Act

This Act was passed to end the illegal import of goods brought into the country such as sugar and molasses from the French and Dutch West Indies. The colonial response to this was that the people rebelled against it because they said that the West Indies would not be able to produce enough of the molasses they needed to make and the prices would be going up.
  • Currency Act

This Act was passed to regulate the status of paper money in the colonial economy. This Act also banned colonial paper money in private transactions. It also did not allow an extinction of paper bills beyond the redemption date. The colony petitioned to repeal this Act. It was said to be an economic slowdown in the colonies.
  • Stamp Act

This Act was passed to force tax on any and every paper document. It also was passed to make up for all the debt the British Parliament was in because of the Seven Year war. The colonial response to this was they thought it was unconstitutional and the people rebelled against it and basically protested because they wanted the stamp collectors to put an end to it.
  • Quartering Act

This Act was passed to give British Soldiers a place to stay and for them to have food in the American colonies. The Quartering Act made the Colonies house the soldiers with the barracks they gave. The colonial response to this was they were against it because they had to house soldiers in their home meaning they had no privacy. They also felt like it was unfair since they were being taxed for the barracks.
  • Declaratory Act

This Act was passed the same day that the Stamp Act was canceled meaning it was dropped. The Declaratory Act was to make all the taxing in America and Great Britain the same. It also stated that Parliament could pass laws and involve the American Colonies “in all cases whatsoever”. The colonial response didn't really have a response; they didn't really have a concern.
  • Townshend Act

This Act was passed to tax any goods that were brought from American Colonies. The Townshend Acts forced duties on British China, glass, lead, paint, paper and tea imported to colonies. The colonial response to the Act was to boycott British goods. Charles Townshend also raised the income of colonial governors and judges so he would be sure that they were loyal to the American officials to the British Crown.
  • Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre was when the British soldiers and the Patriots had a street fight. They threw sticks, snowballs, stones and 5 colonists were killed. This all started with the citizens when they attacked the British sentinel. This all led to the Revolutionary War.
  • Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party is when 342 chests were thrown from ships to the Boston Harbor. All of the Americans were protesting about being taxed on tea. This was supposed to show Great Britain that all of the people we're not gonna let them tax them which led to colonies to fight for their independence.
  • Quartering Act of 1774

This Act was kinda like the Quartering Act of 1765. This was to all soldiers, not just British Soldiers. The colonial felt the same as the Quartering Act of 1765 that it was unfair because they were being taxed for the soldiers' homes, food and fuel.
  • Intolerable Acts (Coercive Acts)

This Act was passed to punish the colony of Massachusetts because of the Boston Tea Party. This was a total of 4 laws. The colonists thought it was violating their rights. The people saw this as a threat since they were getting punished for the Boston Tea Party.
  • Quebec Act

This Act was to get rid of loyalty oaths and it also gave people religious freedom. The colonial government pushed the people to cause a revolution because their rights were being ignored.
