Proclamation of 1763
Purpose: Was to prevent settlers from settling west of the Appalachia, and they passed this so there wasn't another war.
Reaction: The colonists didn't like this because they forced to move out of their land that they had settled in already. -
Sugar Act
Purpose: It was the first tax on colonies, and it was used to raise revenue. They aimed to end trade in sugar and molasses.
Reaction: Colonists were upset because they were taxed and thought it was unfair. -
Stamp Act
Purpose: The British were in debt after the Seven Years War, so they put taxes on almost everything to raise funds or make money.
Reaction: The colonists also hated this act because they had no say in it, which created the phrase, "No Taxation without Representation." -
Quartering Act
Purpose: This act allowed soldiers to stay in the home or barracks of colonists.
Reaction: Colonists didn't like it because they were being taxed to pay for provisions and barracks for the army, not because the soldiers had to stay in their homes. -
Declaratory Act
Purpose: The same day this act was passed was the same say the Stamp act was repealed. This act stated that Parliament could make laws binding the colonies, "in all cases whatsoever."
Reaction: again, the colonists didn't like this act because it was a threat to their independence. They still had no say because they have no representation. -
Townshend Act(s)
Purpose: It was a series of measures or laws that taxed goods imported into the colonies and took away some freedom from the colonists.
Reaction: The colonists didn't like it and saw that they were abusing their power. This was the same thing as the other acts, they had no representation, so it wasn't fair to the colonists at all. -
Boston Massacre
Purpose: It helped to unite the colonies against Britain, and this helped them realize that they needed independence from Britain.
Reaction: This was the time for colonists to fight back against britain for being unfair. -
Tea Act
Purpose: This act was to make sure the East India Company was secure, so they granted this company a monopoly.
Reaction: Again, the colonists didn't like this act even though the tax on tea was there before this act. They were upset because the company had control on tea sales, so this led to the Boston Tea Party where colonists dumped tea. -
Boston Tea Party
Purpose: This was a protest against the Tea Act that Parliament passed. This gave the East India Company the power to control the price of tea and the colonists didn't like it.
Reaction: Colonists were upset, so they protested. this was because they had taxation without representation. -
Coercive Act
Purpose: Series of laws that restricted trade and gave the British more control in Boston.
Reaction: This is what brought the colonies closer together and causes a rebellion against Britain. The colonists were upset and wanted to do something about it.
