Acts passed by Parliament

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Its a law that forbade the colonists to settle west of the Appalachian mountains. To prevent conflict and war between the native Americans and the British. The colonist didn't like this, they didn't like having to move from their settlement's.
  • Sugar Act

    It was a tax on sugar, molasses, and most shipped goods. This made colonist angry because they now have to pay tax on sugar. This led to colonist fighting for their freedom. They ended up boycotting the British goods.
  • Stamp Act

    It said they had to pay a tax on all sorts of printed materials such as newspapers, magazines and legal documents. It was called the Stamp Act because the colonies were supposed to buy paper from Britain that had an official stamp on it that showed they had paid the tax.The colonies reacted in protest. They refused to pay the tax. The tax collectors were threatened or made to quit their jobs. They burned the stamped paper in the streets. The colonies also boycotted British products- merchants.
  • Quartering Act

    It was made saying that American colonies should provide the British soldiers with any needed accommodations or housing. It also required colonists to provide food for any British soldiers in the area. This angered the colonist because it required them to provide supplies and barracks from their own belongings and lands.
  • Declaratory Act

    This act was passed by the parliament to control the colonists without angering them with a new set of taxes. The act declared Parliament's right to legislate for the colonies for whatever reason. The colonists were not bothered by the act. It taught the colonist of the power they have when they act as a group, rather than separately.
  • Townshend Act

    Parliament gave the commisioner's the power to search homes and private warehouses for smuggled items that had entered the colonies without payment of the customs duties. The colonies didn't like this so they boycotted British goods.
