Insight
Sampson and Gregory converse about their hatred for Montagues. Gregory constantly demeans Sampson, claiming his masculunity is questionable. -
Servants Against Servants
While Sampson and Gregory argue, they notice servants of The Montague family, of which they have just been discussing their hatred for. Upon confrontation, Sampson bites his thumb at them, a gesture of hate or disrespect. Sampson and Gregory quickly improvise a way to provoke the Montagues' servants legally. -
Battle Between Forces
Both the groups of servants break out into a brawl, and Benvolio arrives. Benvolio attempts to break up the fight and appease the servants, yet is met with Tybalt and his aggressive behavior. He finds himself between arguing with Tybalt and trying to break up the fight the servants. -
Revolution
With Benvolio and Tybalt now fighting along with the servants, citizens are encouraged to join in. Three or four citizens join the fight and decide to neutralize both the sides by beating them with their clubs and spears. -
The Lords Enter
Amidst the hasty struggle of the servants, Capulet, Montague, Lady Capulet, and Lady Montague enter. Montague draws his sword, while cursing at Capulet and blaming him for the outbreak of violence. Lady Montague and Lady Capulet both restrain their husbands' the best they can among all the confrontations. -
Prosecution
Prince Escalus enters with an escort, and begins shouting at the rioters. Continually, he yells their punishment for what they have done. He explains that the feud between The Capulets and The Montagues had been happening for too long, and states that if another brawl breaks out because of the feud, the instigators and anyone else involved will be put to death or tortured. -
Resolution
After Prince Escalus leaves with The Capulets, Montague proceeds to question Benvolio on the fight that had just happened. Benvolio explains the best he can remember. Lady Montague then asks Benvolio if he has seen Romeo, and he states that he saw Romeo in the woods alone and possibly crying. No one knows the reason why he acts like he does. -
Romeo
After instructions from Lady Montague to extract information from Romeo, Benvolio proceeds to question Romeo about his feelings. Romeo admits that Rosaline no longer loves him, but he still has feelings for her. Benvolio recommends that Romeo be willing to try other women, and Romeo despises his offer.They both leave the scene.
